A 12-year-old girl and a 23-year-old man appeared in court in Medicine Hat, Alta., on Tuesday, accused of murdering her parents and younger brother.
I just watched the 11-o'clock news and it was stated that the two were, in fact, a couple. They interviewed the 23 year old's friend, who said they were dating and "inseparable"... His friends even shunned him for the relationship with the pre-teen.

WTF!?!

I must say, what the fuck is up with kids these days? A few months ago we have a 12 year old girl stabbing a peer outside a club in downtown Toronto... Now, this 12 year old girl kills her family with her 23 year old boyfriend (and after they put him away for life I hope he gets 'sexual interference' and 'contributing to the delinquency of a minor' too just so his new cell mates have some conversation to break the ice with.)

Are we raising our children too liberally? Or, is this just the product of our modern social fabric? How does a 12 year old get the idea that murder was the right idea to solve her problems?

I personally do not think we need to be more conservative with what our kids are exposed to media wise... as many have called for, suggesting it is a main cause of such problems. However, I do think we need to provide more positive and structured environments for today's youth. Maybe even provide more encouragement or incentive for participation in such activities.

EDIT: Murbot, are you not right near Medicine Hat? This local news for you?

no sig, how's that for being a rebel!

Agreed. Here in the states we wait until we're at least 14.

I believe that she was involved in it. Most think it was just the boyfriend, though. This is what started the media Myspace raid.

I live 5 minutes away from there.

Actually, the night it happened they had a bulletin on during the hockey game commericals, looking for this 12 year old girl. They said it was a family emergency and they needed to find her. Picture and name on TV. I guess they thought she was kidnapped or ran away from the killer.

Then they realized she was involved, and they caught them both a few hours away, and all they'd say was that the girl was "safe" and that's it. They can't name her as a murder suspect because of the young offender's act, but I guess they can't answer everyone's questions of "is it her?" with a no, because she actually did do it.

They can't say she did it, but won't say she didn't, because she did and everyone knows it, but it won't be confirmed.

Pretty fucked up.

The guy was a weirdo, always walked around with a black trenchcoat and his face painted white with black arrows and shit on him. "Dating" a fucking 12 year old. Her parents had reported him to the police and were trying to stop them from seeing each other.

Slashed their throats. Jesus christ.

She was twelve, twelve year olds are known for their character judgement.

I magine the guy will get life in prison (which in Canada will translate to roughly 16 years) and the girl hopefully won't getting anything other than some serious counselling and a second shot at life.

As her better judgement included killing her parents and brother, I doubt her taste in men would be normal.

You could argue that the 23 year old might have convinced her to do it. However, I think if she could murder her family then her 'problems' probably started well before the 23 year old was involved.

To lock her away at this age would not do any good... she'll be useless in society when released and might even revert back to previous mindsets. I just hope counselling can do some good with her, but I'm not sure how they would even start to 'help' this one.

Murder was invented in 1983.
