Apparently it's a very rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which could be removed by surgery if caught in time, and can be recovered from... which happened in SJ's case.

Most people die within a year of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer so this must be a rare treatable form indeed...

My boss caught it early just this year. He turned yellow like he had jondes (how you spell?)

He was lucky to have it operated on, and now they are just doing chemo and radiation to get the last of it I guess.

jaundice, irrc.

it's good to hear that steve is recovering well. i thought it funny that he wanted to let everyone know that he had the curable form of pancreatic cancer so that when people googled it they didn't freak out.

Curses! You beat me to it.

I got the actual e-mail from Jobs. Here's how it reads:

Quote:
Team,

I have some personal news that I need to share with you, and I wanted you to hear it directly from me.

This weekend I underwent a successful surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from my pancreas. I had a very rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which represents about 1 percent of the total cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed each year, and can be cured by surgical removal if diagnosed in time (mine was). I will not require any chemotherapy or radiation treatments.

The far more common form of pancreatic cancer is called adenocarcinoma, which is currently not curable and usually carries a life expectancy of around one year after diagnosis. I mention this because when one hears "pancreatic cancer" (or Googles it), one immediately encounters this far more common and deadly form, which, thank god, is not what I had.

I will be recuperating during the month of August, and expect to return to work in September. While I'm out, I've asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple's day to day operations, so we shouldn't miss a beat. I'm sure I'll be calling some of you way too much in August, and I look forward to seeing you in September.

Steve

PS: I'm sending this from my hospital bed using my 17-inch PowerBook and an Airport Express.
Get well soon, Steve!

I'm glad that it was curable! I wouldn't wish pancreatic cancer on anybody.

Having said that, his PS cracked me up!

Oh, and I would have loved to have been there just as he was nodding off with the sleeping gas:

Nurse: "Now Mr Jobs, we're going to ask you to count backwards from 10 as we administer the anaesthetic and feel free to speak what's on your mind as you drift off - don't fight it."

[SJ]: "Yeah, sure, no problem, 10, 9, 8, ... you know our inventory is getting better these days 7, ... 6, ... we got a cool G5 in the PowerBooks ... 5, ... 4, ...and those new colour screen iPods are a treat ... 3, ... we're stocked up and ... ready to go - uh ... oh... did I think that or say it ... ?" [nods off]

Good grief! That's a thing to read on a Monday morning. Thankfully it sounds like he'll be all right. Unfortunately most stricken by pancreatic cancer are not so lucky (including the late, great Bill Hicks).

So drop some money into the bucket.

The ever wonderful Rob Enderle has chosen to once again criticise Apple, this time because Apple apparently needs to have a groomed heir apparent to Steve Jobs.

Apparently Mr Enderle is unaware that Apple is a company, not a sovereign monarchy. I'm sure if Steve was (God forbid) unable to continue as CEO a replacement would be chosen in due course by Apple's extremely talented and high profile board members. And it would be nice if our good friend Rob had waited - even a tiny bit - before launching yet another attack.

He's such a grubby little troll

Get well soon Steve

Apple Computer Chief Executive Steve Jobs said yesterday he had successful surgery over the weekend to remove a cancerous tumor in his pancreas and that he will spend a month recuperating before returning to work in September.

Jobs, 49, said the form of pancreatic cancer he had can be cured by surgical removal if diagnosed in time, as his case was.

"I will not require any chemotherapy or radiation treatments," he wrote in an e-mail yesterday from his hospital bed to employees of the Cupertino, Calif.,-based maker of the Macintosh computer and iPod music player.

Timothy Cook, executive vice president of worldwide sales and operations, will run Apple while Jobs recovers, the e-mail said.

Jobs is also chairman and CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, the Emeryville, Calif.-based creator of award-winning films "Finding Nemo," "Toy Story" and "Monsters, Inc."

"Something like this really makes you start to think about how important Steve Jobs is to Apple," said Rob Enderle, an analyst with the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif.

"There's no path of ascension, no next in line. They need to groom a replacement and make it look like someone is ready and in the wings. It's just prudent," Enderle said.

If Jobs' recovery were to extend beyond September, "the board feels totally comfortable with Tim and the experienced management team we have in place," said Apple board member William Campbell, chairman of software maker Intuit.

Jobs will continue "to have his hands on the tiller" and be in touch with Cook and other Apple executives while he recuperates, Campbell said.

"I was over there a little bit ago," Campbell said. "He is awake, alert, energetic, his color is good. He's animated, and the doctors have communicated that Steve's prognosis is extremely good."

Jobs co-founded Apple with computer designer Steve Wozniak in 1975.

He left the company to start rival computer maker Next Inc. in 1985 before returning to Apple in 1997.

"I had a very rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor," Jobs wrote in the e-mail.

"The far more common form of pancreatic cancer is called adenocarcinoma," he said. "I mention this because when one hears 'pancreatic cancer' (or Googles it), one immediately encounters this far more common and deadly form, which, thank God, is not what I had."

The company earlier this month said third-quarter profit more than tripled to $61 million as surging sales of the iPod, introduced in 2001, drove revenue for the period to an eight-year high.

Profit and sales may beat analyst estimates this quarter, Apple said.

Pixar President Ed Catmull and Executive Vice President John Lasseter remain in charge at the animation company, said Apple spokeswoman Katie Cotton.

Shares of Apple fell 30 cents to close Friday at $32.34 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

They have gained 51 percent this year.

Passions for Steve Jobs aside, from a business perspective, Enderle is correct.

I have lost several friends to pancreatic cancer, and one of my grandmothers succumbed to this illness. Every time I hear of someone who has been diagnosed with this it makes my stomach lurch. It is truly wonderful to hear that there is one type of pancreatic cancer that can be arrested.

I agree with Enderle that Steve Jobs is hugely important to Apple (who doesn't?) but look at Apple's board, it includes people like Al Gore and Fred Anderson. I'm sure having such a good board consider the options if and when the time comes is better than having a successor pre-appointed by Steve. And notice that none of the analysts believe Steve's month long absence (fingers crossed) will have a noticeable effect on the company.

Even if you agree with Enderle, he's still a slimy little troll looking for publicity. I could never be someone like that, to be a wholly unlike-able shit-stirrer for a living.

I agree with thegelding in that Jobs will indeed be on-stage in Paris to unveil the next iMac. It's just the way Steve is, he loves his work and won't miss the showmanship part of it, for anything. Luckily he's going to be ok but somehow I think that he would take the stage in less than perfect health anyway. Crazy work ethic.

Here's more positive news in an update from MacMinute. It looks like Apple's PR department is handling the matter nicely.

Medical experts and Apple executives are confident that Apple CEO Steve Jobs will recover from his cancer surgery to be back in September better than ever. "The surgery was hugely successful, and the prognosis is excellent," Bill Campbell, an Apple director said. "We feel very relieved and optimistic about the future." The rare type of Pancreatic cancer that Jobs was treated for is among the most curable, according to doctors. As Jobs told his employees, islet cell neuroendocrine tumors represent only a small percentage of the total cases of pancreatic cancer diagnosed each year in the U.S. "These tumors tend to be less malignant," said Dr. Jeffrey Norton, a specialist in gastrointestinal oncology and pancreas surgery at Stanford University Medical Center. "If you remove all of the tumor, there is a high probability the patient is cured." Norton said only about 48 of the estimated 30,000 cases of pancreatic cancer in the U.S. each year are this less lethal form.

He'll be fine. And I'm betting he'll make the Paris Expo his first public appearance since the operation, and he'll get a huge, roaring and longer-than-usual ovation when he walks onto the stage. Just watch...

I even predict a quick glasses removal and eye-wipe on his part as he is momentarily overwhelmed at the outpouring of support and good will.

Get well quick, Steve. And try not to yell at any nurses or other staff. We know how you get...

haha, yeah. If he doesn't make it to the keynote that would be the second most steve-like thing he could do. But I still hope he makes it. It can't be a Stevenote without Steve
