So, turtle: would you overlook the shitty temporary Dell display and let me join the Cool Kids Club™ with my handy dandy new budget-conscious hackintosh?

Yep. It's a Canon PIXMA Pro9000 MkII I got for almost half-price at Amazon ("used", but not really - only the UPC was missing) for doing high-quality, large-format photo prints. The largest paper sizes I could use on my MP560 were 8.5x11 or A4; the Pro9000 can print to A3+, or 13"x19". In fact, on top of the printer are a trio of borderless 13"x19" test prints - they came out beautifully. Having 8 separate color ink tanks instead of 4 (or less) helps a lot - they're just more expensive to replace.

Artoo!
Does that do anything, or is it just a stationary trinket? I'd love to have a little Artoo-Detoo hard drive or something useful/handy to my iMac. I'd replace my Western Digital drive with one... EDIT: I found a hub! |

Yes, it's a a shot I took in 2005. (I don't like the frame or reflective glass though and am thinking of changing - not sure if it's possible.)

I want a combo external hard drive/3-port hub/card reader Artoo...with spinning dome, lights and authentic sounds.
If you unplug a USB device without unmounting it first, you get that memorable "scream" (like when he got shot in the Death Star trench), or that "angry", feisty set of beeps. Your Time Machine backup could be on Artoo, just like the Death Star technical plans! The possibilities are endless, really. Hard to believe someone hasn't done this. All throughout the entire saga, Artoo interfaces with various computers. So it's a perfect, logical character to use as the basis for a really cool 3-in-1 peripheral. So many clever touches could be incorporated. |

I have been cleaning up and moving stuff around my apartment so decided to get a shot while everything was clean.
24" iMac (Early 2009, 3.06 Ghz Dual Core 4GB Ram) 30" Dell Monitor - I generally have VMWare up on this monitor for work. iPad 64GB 3G iPhone 4 - just to the right of the huey which is between the monitors ReadyNAS NVX 4TB Mac Mini (2Ghz Dual Core, 2GB Ram) running headless and I connect to it from the iMac or iPad. |

Ended up getting that second shelf bought and setup, and straightened things up a bit.
I ended up going with the staggered setup so I would have a little extra space on top of the bottom unit to setup the iPad stand, and for stability (the top shelf is up against the wall and the mantelpiece; I didn't feel like putting more holes in the wall to actually screw it in place). It works out rather well, even if it does look a bit odd. |

My current setup:
1. Core2Quad 9550 Hackintosh inside a CoolerMaster CM590 case 2. Trusty 1 GHz TiBook 3. Acer 22" display 4. Cheap Hanns-G 19" display with Neo-Flex rotating stand (would have never thought of using a lamp 5. iPhone 3gs 16GB 6. Canon i960 Printer 7. Intel Atom 230 board running VMWare server and hosting my m0n0wall firewall, a FreeNAS server, and my web server. 8. The long suffering QuickSilver G4 867, outpaced in every way by the little bitty box sitting on top of it. He needs a new home. |

Finished moving into a new dorm so it’s time for a new photo. - 15” MacBook Pro, pre-unibody - 19” Asus display - 12” PowerBook G4, running Arch Linux as a server - Macally Icekey - Microsoft mouse - Sennheiser HD280 headphones, plugged into a Headroom Bithead amp, velcro’d under the desk - Two hard drives behind the MBP, a 1TB for Time Machine and a 320GB for extra storage - iPhone dock The books you see are Paul Theroux’s The Great Railway Bazaar and Natural Language Processing and Knowledge Representation. The latter is for my undergrad thesis, which I just started officially working on this week. The stand the display is on is something I built a few years ago. There’s enough clearance under it to slide a keyboard, allowing me to open up a lot of desk space when I need it and putting the top of the display at the same level as the MBP’s while it’s perched on my iCurve. Other stuff in the photo includes the sticker on the clock which is from Espresso Parts and came included with an order I received from them recently, including that awesome black cup you see there and some other coffee gadgets. Next to the cup is a Chemex coffee brewer, my current favorite brewing method. Speaking of coffee, a picture I took earlier: This is right behind my desk, so I’m including it in my computer setup. From left to right: - Coffee sample tray - Baratza Maestro Plus grinder - Scale - Beans from Houston’s Catalina Coffee - Same cup as above - Timer - Chemex (same from the above photo) - Bodum french press - Half of a Boston shaker, used as a “sink” of sorts to catch excess water - Water filter - Two insulated Bodum mugs - Nissan thermos, keeps coffee hot for hours. I bought it last summer when I had a loooong commute and wanted good coffee at work - Water kettle - Chemex filters |

Nice! How does the Chemex compare to the French press?

It’s hard to compare, they’re two very different brewing methods. I prefer the Chemex as I think the French press tends to mask the characteristics of the bean in its own sludge, though I’ve had some success with the break-and-scoop method. Ever since I got the Chemex I’ve used it 95% of the time. I always try a new coffee in the French press a few times but so far the Chemex has always won. Cleanup is also easier, which is a big plus with my setup.
I also like that I can brew a few cups and just leave it in the Chemex and it’ll stay hot, can’t do that with a French press. Do you have either as well? |

Are those nozzles for coolant piping? Or are they just big heatsinks with the two fans next to them? I can't really tell. Did you find that 4.8 is most stable or are you just satisfied and don't want to push it further?
