I've been trying to concoct a group-friendly (teenagers) media player for years, and have had varying success with different options. Goal #1 has been to keep costs as cheap as possible. The first setup was an existing computer with added Bluetooth using iTunes and Salling Clicker on an old Palm handheld. Let's just say that the Palm was not treated with much care, because the teenagers wanted to interact with its resistive touchscreen like they have with iPod Touches, and it very much does not work like that. Setup #2 is now just a computer & mouse running iTunes.

ANYway, I recently got a free, old DirectTV TiVo DVR, and had hoped to use it for this purpose. After lots of searches, though, I'm coming up with no options to use it without satellite service. Does anybody here have experience in using old DVR's for anything? Is it possible to sideload content and use the box as a remote-friendly media player?
