I just got a brand new 12'' ibook G4. It plays CD's, but it wont play DVD's. When i put in a DVD it tries to read it and just spits it back out. Also, when i try to run the DVD player I get a message that says "A valid DVD drive could not be found {-70012}." This isn't right though, since it is supposed to have a combo drive that is able to read and play DVD's. Is there something I'm missing, or what am I supposed to do? thanks

hmmm, i guess what might be a good idea is to check if there is actually a DVD drive in there. apple does sell cd-rom drive ibooks to edu market.

to check:
open system profiler (find app or go to about this mac and click on more info)
go to ATA on hardware list and find the cd drive
click on it, and on the bottom look for "drive type"
it should read "CD-RW/DVD-ROM"

otherwise call apple or bring it into a store.

scrouds... not that I have the problem jontunn is talking about... but my combo drive that plays dvds does not show up as "CD-RW/DVD-ROM". I think you might be mistaken?

Same, and I have SuperDrive PowerBook. However, that information does show up in the "disk burning" section of system profiler.

Another possibility is that the DVD he's trying is scratched and the system is just getting confused when it can't mount it.

Have you tried multiple DVDs?
