Has anyone else noticed that, since installing 10.4.6, their Powerbook/Macbook makes a little sound when you jostle it a bit? I've read that this is the sound of the motion sensors getting worried and parking the drive. What I'm wondering is, where is this sound file? I'd like to change it to a bloodcurdling scream.

Are you sure it's a sound file and not just the drive head arms clicking?

No, it's definately a sound file. Believe me, I wouldn't swing my shiney new Macbook around hard enough to hurt it like that - although I have been known to send a Windows laptop sailing through the air from time to time.

Sorry Brad, you obviously deserve heaps of scorn for knowing too much about the innards of the machine, and thinking of all the possible sources of the sound instead of jumping to conclusions that it is a sound file, only a sound file, and nothing but a sound file.

A) I know the difference between a mechanical noise and a sound file
B) I would never treat my laptop with such force
c) My god, does someone pay you to read this all day long and comment on every single post?

I felt your comment was the equivalent of being asked if I'm sure the unit is plugged in. Sorry I rolled my eyes at that.

No, but he probably should be. But, please, feel free to contribute to the cause.

Hm... if you try often enough, you could probably catch it with the terminal command 'lsof' -- it LiSts Open Files.

But, even if you do catch it, it'll be mixed with a bunch of files that you're running. You could probably safely eliminate the extra hash from programs you're running with 'lsof -u ^501' if your UID is 501.

Brad, I will join your legions of fans in defending you next time the need arises if you can get this thread back on topic. I've changed my mind about the scream and I know want my laptop to go 'Weeeee!' when I rock it gently to and fro. Help me, please!

For what it's worth, I grepped through the lsbom of the 10.4.6 combo (PPC) update and found absolutely no sounds (checking for "aif", "mp3", and "mov") like you describe.

Aw, come on Brad... you know that Apple would most certainly use a .wav to make a sound like that! I'm disappointed.

Reports are getting in that putting this in Terminal helps:
Code:
defaults write com.apple.CoreServices.placeboToolkit emitCrazyNoises -bool FALSE

I, too, went through the BOM, and found no mention of Sudden Motion Sensor-related kexts getting updated, nor any audio file in anything seemingly remotely related.

Of course, that's the PowerPC BOM. Maybe the sound file is Intel-only.

Wow... I thought you were bluffing. They really did name it Janus. Good for them... I guess I don't give the Windows Media team enough credit.

Hmmm... first of all, Chucker, not sure if you're serious, but either way that's hilarious.

I'm wondering if the sound could be from the firmware upgrade. The sound is made as soon as the blue bootup screen appears. I can't make it happen in Windows, but the firmware at this point is emulating bios...

Well, regardless of where the sound came from, it seems that the motion-detecting, drive-locking functionality may not be functioning in Windows. One more reason to remove it from my drive. (The main reason being that the only time I've used Windows on my Macbook is to say, 'Hey, your PowerBook may have a cooler name, but can it do this?')
