Not super familiar with her, but damn...so nice to hear someone pointing it out/mocking it.

Whitney Cummings on celebrities on social media during "these uncertain times".

Hope it plays...it's an Instagram link, so I don't know if you have to be logged in, etc. Who knows.

The scary thing is, she's not exaggerating. I've seen/heard this kind of thing with my own eyes and ears the past six or so weeks, while tooling around online.

"Okay, there's this stuff called 'construction paper'...you should be able to order it from Amazon. And what you do is...wait, let me first tell you about crayons. Are you guys familiar with these?"

Yes. Us plebes in Flyoverville have been doing this shit since the dawn of man. You are the ones acting like you've suddenly discovered plutonium. Just because you're now forced to spend more than 90 minutes a day with your own kids, stop acting like you've just written the world's first How to Entertain and Interact with Children guidebook.

We've got it all figured out. Everyone's doing just fine without your "Pop-Tarts make a wonderful, easy-to-prepare pre-snack, especially if you add some kale and olive oil...just be sure to keep the glue stick and glitter away from them" insights, Gwyneth.

The biggest side effects/impacts from COVID-19 appear to be severe cases of know-it-allitis and attention-whoredom ("watch me play shitty guitar on Instagram, but you're gonna grade me on a coronavirus curve, right?)", from what I'm seeing.

Paul: a couple of things...

No one is forcing you to watch their bullshit (anyone’s bullshit)

Paul Krugman won the Economics Prize in honor of Alfred Nobel because he observed that trade is highest between countries that produce and consume the same things. This feature of economic systems ran counter to the accepted model that materials flow in counter balanced trading networks. That old model was wrong, but what Krugman really pointed out was an often under appreciated aspect of human nature: we produce and consume for people very much like ourselves. Celebrities or twitidioits or TikTokTykes are producing content for themselves. If you’ve somehow stumbled upon a piece of entertainment you don’t get, then it’s probably not made by people who understand anything about you and more to the point: they never intended you to see it.

Bob, a couple of things...

Okay, thanks for essplainin’ it all for me. And I don’t give two sweet, on-fire fucks about all your Paul Krugman citing. Don’t fucking wag your finger at me like you’re having to pat me on the head and “teach me how everything works”.

Everybody be going crazy at home...

I have to say that I agree about the celb thing, it's so fake. Never could understand the obsession with these people, as if being able to act, throw balls, hit balls, kick balls, or sing makes someone worth studying everything else they do. The real special people are the ones who have to put up with those idiots day in and day out. Okay enough about that.

The biggest side effects of COVID-19 aren't those people and the silly things they have to say. It's the fact that we have an opportunity to rethink how we do things, like how we communicate, how much we travel and by what method, how do business (do we really need to fly all over the world, or across the country to get a signature on the dotted line, when a video meeting is just as good?), what jobs really are valuable (what people really keep the world going), and so on and so forth. We need to look for the opportunities to improve ourselves and the world around us.

Chucker, yeah ok API.

My understanding is it can't be shoe horned onto the existing app. So if you're an iPhone user in Australia that means it's useless unless you're prepared to give up a whole lot of your phone's functionality.

It's also my understanding that this problem is only Apple's fault in so far as Apple's existing privacy controls cause the problem.

I'm not going to get into this argument.

My attitudes and response to the government intruding on my privacy are deeply embedded in personal experience. There is absolutely nothing anyone could ever say to convince me to be less cautious than I am.

iOS 13.5 is out with the API jointly built by Google and Apple backed into it. I'm not going to leave my phone on 13.4 so I'm updating. I really do hope we don't all throw out privacy for the sake of safety.

Reading the articles about the API it should be good and I'm ok with what I did gather from it. Of course, I didn't deep dive into the specs. It was nice to see SC on the list of states looking to implement it already. This is really good given I'm here now!

Really, I'm good living my life like a hermit though.

And, so it begins.

Your data is safe with … SQUIRREL!

Also, considering Apple vetted the app in question, my trust in Apple to handle this super-sensitive information is now in question. I feel that I need to toss this into the "Please Don't Trust Us, Inc." thread.

I've been waiting for Frontline to weigh in.

They did just that earlier this week.

I'm actually surprised at how early into it (for the US) I was aware of this thing. All because of a Twitter thread I happened upon.

This thread is a real ride if you read it from the beginning.

Let's all give props to DrBobsky for being ahead of the pack with regards to how this was going to play. I don't mind admitting that I was at least moderately wrong earlier in the thread.

It is going to be an absolute shag-wanking disaster for the events industry, though. But, probably that couldn't be helped.

The case numbers in the US blow my mind, they really do. There are more cases in the small city of Yuma Az now than our Province has had since the start, and Yuma has a way smaller population.

I think the breaks are the result of two things: 1) Social media is more entertaining for our old members who no longer post here, and 2) Stress levels are off the charts for many people. Mine are the lowest they have been in many years, but they are still there.

And neither of those reasons is enough to keep me away!

I watched a friend of a friend transform into a Balkanized über-patriot, promising us that we would “all see” how the government has everything under control. It was terrifying to witness the conversion.

Yes, he had a lot of other pressures on him. And he’s just one example.

Since I still haven't sold my home in Tidewater I'm still dealing with that stress. However, I'm in a far better place now that I was before moving. This means that while I'm watching SC numbers spike and even more in my region I'm good.

It was sad to see that CardboardCon would end up having to go virtual given the other Atlanta events are. I always enjoyed seeing the pics from it and the creativity of the costumes.

So it appears as though I had it in late April. Negative nasal swab at the time, positive blood antibody test last week. Some of you were around for that when I was complaining on twitter. Heavy fatigue and muscle ache, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath severe even when I walked up stairs, diarrhea and nausea, cough, loss of appetite and metallic tastes. No fever, though! I had hot sweats and flashes and I was barely sleeping, managing like 2-3 hours at a time, being awake for 6-8 hours, then another 2-3 hours of sleep. I never got hospitalized but I did get to hang out in urgent care on supplemental oxygen masking. Twice.

So I knew that COVID was real, and that COVID was shitty to have.

You can imagine me getting pissed off watching my mother's slow conversion into a FOX News watching, Trump-supporting, "there is no pandemic, this is a mainstream media lie", "the president is doing everything correctly" kind of person. The kind of person who says there is no virus threat and even if there is a virus it won't really hurt or kill anyone and the numbers are fakes and all precautions are overblown and overhyped. As she's someone who is immunocompromised and high risk. But she won't wear a mask, because that would be buying into the lies. Last week she posted on her Facebook that it's a shame in 6 months we've become sheep following the will of authorities who want us to be giving up all freedoms as Americans and become obedient socialist slaves like those people in other countries and she doesn't understant how more of us aren't rising up and how the whole world has been taken over by a hoax and...

and I finally had to cut all contact and decide I don't have a single living relative. There's no way to reasonably contradict this. There's only walking away and saying, "I can't". I cannot comprehend how you can believe that half the US and a bunch of the rest of the world is all locking down international travel for fun as part of a conspiracy to take away Your Personal Freedoms as part of some one world order shit.

Sorry about your stress. You've been pretty chill here.

We actually held CardboardCon 2020!!!
In fact we are in the running to have been the only Sci-Fi convention to have been held in Atlanta in 2020 (the other is a historical fiction con).

Crazy times.

Capella that is super tough.
My mom is being good, thankfully.
It's interesting that there is a shared belief between maskers and non-maskers that the opposition is suffering from psychosis.

My state has had an executive order in place since early April (when everything was still closed, we were the last state to start opening) requiring facemasks when going into any establishment and outdoors when social distancing isn’t possible.

We currently have 90 Covid patients hospitalized statewide and had 5 deaths yesterday. The day before was zero deaths, for the first time since this all started. Our state is currently looking at in-person K-12 classes in the fall because our state has a handle on the spread of this virus.

I wish we were a true United States of America, instead of regional governors having to come together and form pockets of states united against the spread of Covid. The politicizing of the act of wearing a facemask is the worst possible thing that could have happened.

I've been really trying to stay as calm as possible with the stress of the other house and all. Work hasn't helped with projects happening there too. So really I'm just sitting on my porch swing most evenings trying to relax from the day. Finally started working out again too! This has helped a lot. As my cousin says, I took the COVID challenge and won with 10lbs gained so far!

Glad to hear you were able to have CardboardCon after all! Even though the virus sucks, we still need to live our lives.

Does that mean if we sometimes wear a mask and sometimes don't we don't have a psychosis?

Looking at all the old, sick folks dying, I decided that getting back into shape should be my number one priority through this. I started working out and changed my diet. I was up to 196, and weighed in this passed Monday at 180. I haven't weighed 180 since before I got married 25 years ago!

I have discovered that I absolutely hate pushups and sit-ups, but they are helping a lot. When I started I could barely do one of each, but now I'm cranking out 50/day each, along with a bunch of other stuff, as well as riding my mountain bike to work when it is convenient.

I'm having trouble with the last 10-15 pounds. I weighed in yesterday at 178 on the way to 165-170 (my target BMI for 50 and 5'9"), but man those two pounds took a ton of effort!

I'm wrestling with this one. I'm starting to get contacts for photo gigs from couples who couldn't hold their parties this past spring/summer, and from photographers who want to expand their bookings. Based on a handful of calls, September may be going gangbusters as couples try to squeeze in some kind of party before it gets too cold.

Our provincial staged reopening plans mean that venues have to place strict food service controls (no buffet, no family platters) and guest limits (no more than 50 under current stage 3 rules). A few of the venues I've been in a lot have added tents, and are booking wedding parties 7 days a week to make up for lost time. In the past, the wedding season was mainly a Saturday affair with good venues booked a year a head of time; premium venues, 2 years; and some exclusive ones, as much as three years.

So, on the one hand there's potentially a lot of extra cash to be made up, but I don't need to take the risks as much as some others may. My 9-5 job is happy to let me work from home for the foreseeable future...

I am kinda surprised there hasn't been much chatter in this thread. I mean, you could take so many different sides about something like this. Pure science, emotional, religious, anarchist, etc...

My family has been laying low since the initial lockdown in March/April. My wife and I make runs to the stores as needed but generally still staying isolated.

We are finally going to start up extracurricular activities though. We are going to make sure they follow the distancing and masks and such, but we aren't going to stay in the hollowed mountain forever.

We aren't ready to throw caution to the wind, just start to live life again. We aren't in a hurry to get into church physically yet since we can still stream and video chat the sessions we take part in. Plus, there's plenty to crazy people in churches that think they are immune because they are a Christian.

I still haven't lost the weight I've gained. My strength is back (mostly) but the weight loss hasn't happened yet. Been working out three times a week, but I'm about to add 2 more days for extra cardio. I'm sure that will do the trick for me.

I'm trying to live my life as normally as possible. I started working out back in late March, early April and have shed oer 20 pounds. When I started I could barely do 1 pushup, but now can get in 25 full-press pushups and another 25 sissy-versions. Yeah, I was way out of shape! Also doing lots of sit-ups and some "weight" lifting, where by "weight" I mean things I can find around the house because weight sets have pretty much disappeared from shelves and companies like Bowflex ain't got nothin'!

The wife and I still do date night on Tuesdays and hit a restaurant, then ice cream or some other thing. We have been camping every other weekend, hit church once or twice a month (our group is small, not one of those mega-churches), and we wear masks wherever required. I'm in one all day at work, which sucks ass, but I'm trying to be civil about it all. Try to avoid the stupid doom-and-gloom news, and spend almost all of my free time improving my home.

I don't do political rallies, social causes, the bar scene, or any other such money- and time-wasting nonsense. No time or desire for that. Otherwise, life is pretty normal.

That’s the thing, not much has changed, still working full time (self employed). As a introvert all this social distancing is great, far fewer people getting in my face for useless social banter.

As someone who used to go to church I am not at all surprised by the crocks who think they are immune. In my area mask wearing is minimal at best, maybe 1 in 10 use one. Then again all the outbreaks here in the past month have been idiots at huge parties, or in fruit sorting plants. I am coming around to using them, because people won’t social distance in the stores at all.
