This question is for old timers.

Someone recently asked me to attempt to recover files from some old SyQuest disks.

It took some minor surgery to get my Blue & White G3 tower up and running again.

The SyQuest disks (6 or them) are nearly 20 years old.

I have LaCie's Silverlining application for mounting/unmounting and tending to devices on the SCSI chain and it's a pretty solid, technical app.

I also have SCSI Probe, which is a bit less intensive but seems to work okay.

Both of those apps "see" the SyQuest drive.

So far I have managed to successfully access two of the disks, but the others come up as if they're corrupt/uninitiated.

My QUESTION is: are there (were there) ever Mac drivers (startup extensions in OS9.2) for these devices?

If so, do any of you know where to locate them?

I'm pretty sure there was at least a startup extension, if not a control panel, though I wouldn't have the first notion where to find it. It's kind of a pain, but have you tried starting the machine with one of the unreadable disks already inserted into the drive? That used to work for me sometimes. Otherwise, I could probably dig up the extension from an old 9.x backup if that doesn't work.

So it goes.

If there's a way for you to find that extension it would be lovely.

Meanwhile, I'm going to go and try to do what you've suggested.

It seems that the 88MB disks open okay, while the 44MB disks do not open.

My sample of 6 disks is not enough to form a solid theory, but it's notable.

Off to try the start-while-inserted method now.

PM sent. Unfortunately I never moved the software to 9, so I'm sending you the latest installers I had (8.6?). Hopefully they still work.
