Did it go up in price? I don't remember it costing $499. Is that going to be the pattern for today?

Yeah, I think it went up a hundred bucks. $499, bigger screen USB-C and a 12MP camera were my big take-aways. Newer colors as well.

So no flat edge on the new Watch? I know a couple of people that will disappoint. Bigger screens though.

So it goes.

Prices holding the same, but the base storage doubled from 64GB to 128GB. That's nice. That would've cost $100 before today, so...

Sierra Blue replaces Pacific Blue on the Pro. Was kinda hoping that Bronze rumor was true, but no.

Didn't expect this much improvement on the lenses tbh. Macro looks amazing.

Also, ProRes!

Of all the things they did, today, that new iPad mini is the one that got the most attention. 709 must be drooling.

It's a beauty, and seems to be everything the iPad mini can be.

About what I expected...iPads, watch and iPhones. Nothing life-altering or earth-shattering, just the usual September upgrades/improvements.

I notice they're keeping a boatload of models around to hit those various price points.

SE, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, the new ones, starting at $399 and hitting those $100 increments until the new 13 mini at $699. That 12 mini at $599 is slightly easier to swallow, but I just don't think I could ever bring myself to pay more than $500, tops, for a phone.

Nothing I saw today pulls me off any plans to upgrade to a(nother) SE. And, if they keep to history, there's a chance an upgraded (at least below the hood) SE shows up in the first months of 2022, sporting the A15. That would be the one to get.

Hell yes. I'll probably even go down a size on my iPhone upgrade next year now that the mini is back. I've been waiting a couple of gens now for a 'worthwhile' mini upgrade.

So it goes.

If I were getting an iPad, that new mini is the only one I'd consider. It's pretty perfect.

What is interesting is I didn't see the CPU disclosed for the new mini. Did I miss it completely? They talked around it but I didn't see it specified.

The new phones look nice and would be an improvement from my 11 Pro but I'm still having a hard time looking at seriously ordering one for me. I might for my wife and then offset our phone replacement cycles. We were staggered for years but then we switched carriers and we synced. Might be time for her to get an upgrade and I hold back.

The new Watch looks like a decent spec bump but not enough to upgrade from the S6. Mrs T is still on the S4 (I think) so maybe I look at something like that for her as a Christmas gift or something.

Everything else felt like jabbering on stage to me. Let them put all the other crap in a press release so they beat on their collective chests without wasting my time.

At the end, during the wrap-up, I thought I heard them say A15 for the new iPad mini. That's nice, putting it on par with the new phones.

Yep, A15 Bionic.

Yeah, that's a great device. As soon as I saw the iPad Air's design, I wondered how that would transform to a Mini, and Apple seems to have nailed it. The right size, the right performance, the right accessories. It's the right iPad.

Although it's a bit expensive. However, it's also now the fastest iPad outside of the M1 Pro's.

Oddly, there's only the $499 64GB base mini and a 256GB $649 mini. No middle ground with a 128GB model.

Apple just has to be weird, don't they?

[edit]: Huh, it's that way for all non-pro iPads. TIL

So it goes.

You'd think they'd do all the iPads at once, in a single event (well, at least the non-Pro models). Because even if they were to hold back some (that affordable base model), then it would all be done together and you you'd have them all upgraded as a set, the iPad, iPad Air and iPad mini.

From today, with confidence, you could know all the non-Pro iPads got their yearly update and were a safe, no-brainer purchase.

Right now the base model has the A13 (up from the A12, I assume?, which is fine and helps keep it affordable), the new mini has the same A15 as the new phones. And then the Air is still at the A14. Why not just wait and do those non-Pro iPads as part of the MacBook Pro event, or include the Air today with the other two, also going to the A15?

There's going to be this one-month period where the "better than base model, but not quite Pro" iPad Air is on last year's chip, when everything around it got updated today. I know it's only a few weeks(?) away, that other event. But it just seems weird to split the models like that.

That means someone who doesn't follow this stuff is going to drop serious money on an iPad Air in the coming weeks, only for Apple to give it a nice upgrade in 2-4 weeks at the MacBook Pro event. I don't see the point in that unnecessary, potentially-confusing "stagger".

They absolutely do. They pull this shit constantly, holding back/not offering the ideal, perfect model of something (gapping/omitting sensible, desirable storage tiers, etc.)!

Perhaps one day there will be three events:

iPhone, iPad, and Mac, each with their respective "accessories" announced alongside. AirPods with the phone, etc.

Maybe.

I doubt it. Apple's gotta be Apple.

It’s a little weird that they’re not simply updating the Air and mini in tandem. They’re clearly related.

I think they should just do the iPhone and watch in September and any Mac and iPads (all three non-pro models) in October or even November. They don't need three events. Two will do it. Two in two months is about all people could realistically deal with when they start to get all "lifestyle" and jibber-jabber-y anyway, and, frankly, some of those presenters just aren't all that engaging. I start to drift when hearing endless spec boilerplate.

If they'd taken all the iPad-related stuff out of this event, it would've shortened it by about 15-20 minutes. Makes for a shorter, more focused iPhone/watch show today, and then those 15-20 minutes (plus another 5-10 for the updated Air, so 30 minutes total) gets added to the October/November Mac event. Each event being not much more than one hour (and well under 90 minutes).

Two major product categories each...boom-boom, boom-boom.

I like how they moved their way down the coast. I recognized San Diego as the final (iPhone destination) the Coronado bridge and the whole harbor/waterfront area.

Is there a camera comparison chart for current and previous model iPhones? I'm just curious how they line up. Like how does my 11 Pro compare to the 13 mini or Pro?

I'm more and more beginning to see the iPhone as my wife's main camera since she never has her point-and-shoot. Heck, I don't even know where it is right now.

I don’t know anyone with a dedicated point-and-shoot digital camera. For years now their iPhones have handled that.

There is usually a comparison feature on the main product page.

Something like this?

There normally is, but it only compares current models. So I will likely end up going back to previous spec sheets, I just wonder if there is already a nicely laid out site that does that for me.
