Without the backing of a major "messenger" service, the appeal to buy Mac may be greatly affected. As good as iChat is, it's worthless without a chat service.

Yahoo has never been very Mac friendly...MS has been luke warm with AOL being the only Mac sanctioned service.

However with MS possibly buying a stake in AOL, does Apple have a backup plan?

Apple should hook up with Google and create the best and most full-featured messenger ever.

Nice idea, but my impression is that Google always has been a lone wolf, and may want to remain that way...

Well, they should continue to develop GoogleTalk as a Windows service as well, but any nod in the direction of Apple (a decent-functioning version) would sends swarms of the Mac faithful flocking to GT as their primary service. Google is very interested in market share as well.

It's also not made by apple. Apple has put a lot of development into iChat, it's a great program, but without a protocol, it *is* pretty much worthless. I doubt that MS 'buying stake' in AOL would equate to somehow dropping AIM protocol from iChat. If anything, it might make messaging more homogenous, as MS and Yahoo have already combined protocols.

Sure, but how will AOL drop support for iChat? Apple can use the same third party hooks that everyone else (Adium, Proteus, Trillian, etc.) uses.

I'd love to use iChat but almost all of my contacts are on MSN, so I only use AdiumX. AdiumX has support for Google Talk under Jabber. I'm not sure what the future will bring in terms of chatting on the Mac, but I can't imagine it becoming less useful or worse.

You do realize that iChat support Jabber too, right?
