I finally buckled and upgraded our TV from a true family member: a 1995 20" Toshiba.

I picked up a cheapo HDMI cable with the new TV, which serves as the main connection with the cable box, and went back to get another today to hookup the DVD player. Surprisingly (for me), I was faced with a choice of about 7 cables, ranging from 15 bucks to over 200.

My question: what should I be looking for to get a good quality cable but not something I don't need? Are they all the same? I imagine not, but don't know what it is that really makes each special (and neither does anyone at the store really).

While I'll never spend 200, I would plunk down 30, 40, 50 if it would make a difference over the course of a number of years.

Any purchasing advice welcome.

Get one from Monoprice.com for $5.

Or if you want it right away, just get the cheapest one available. HDMI cables are margin-builders. You really don't need to spend $50 or even $20 on one.

+1

Monoprice is almost always the right answer for this kind of question.

Thanks all. While, I'll pick up a cheapo locally, that MonoPrice is an animal and will keep it in mind when I need something a bit pricier.

Cheers.

The only cable I've ever not purchased from Monoprice was a GE HDMI cable I got on sale at Target For $9 Black Friday weekend after impulse buying a PS3 slim. I'd never pay regular store prices for cables, ugh. (That GE cable is normally $30! The Nintendo component cable is normally $35!)

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong
