I was a bit surprised to see no thread here on AN about the midwestern ice storms that came through. I am just now getting power back since Tuesday. My house was about 40 degrees inside so me and about 15 other high schoolers picked a house and had a scandalous co-ed sleepover.
Anyway, the ice took out tons of branches and trees in my fair city, and it looks a bit like a hurricane came through. Haven't had school, but my college final is Saturday. Kansas State's library was quite the refugee center... along with tons of other buildings. So did anyone else get hit by this storm? I have a ton of pictures that I'll link to of the ice damage (and a brief photo-tour of K-State's beautiful campus) EDIT: Here is a link to my picture slide-show! Ice Storm '98 FTW!!!
I was in Montreal when it happened. Man, that was something else. The images that came out of all these huge metal power pylons crumpled in heaps of scrap metal having collapsed from the sheer weight of the ice was really something to behold. Some people were without power for 3 weeks. And quite a few people had to deal with flooded homes because without the heat the water froze in the pipes which subsequently burst. The hospital where I worked became a shelter. The streets were so quiet it was spooky but all the ice on the trees was really quite pretty. And then afterwards when it all passed, they had to keep the downtown core closed off for quite a few days afterwards because massively huge sheets of ice were peeling away from the office towers and crashing down. I was one of the lucky few who kept his power the whole time so had people crash out at my place. Too bad I didn't think "scandalous sleep over" otherwise I would have been a little more choosy about which people got to stay. But having gone through this experience I don't envy you the least!!! Hope everything returns to normal pretty soon. Specialists are people who know more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing. Generalists are people who know less and less about more and more until they know nothing about everything. I'm somewhere in the middle. |

Yeah, my best friend lives in Kansas City and she called me Monday morning...the power was off and her street and driveway were very icy. The temp climbed a bit and she eventually made her way out to Panera (so she could get online and eat), then got groceries afterwards.
Sounded like a brutal first part of the week. According to my Dashboard KC weather widget, high of 28 and snow tomorrow. |

Apparently this storm is tracking for the upper midwest now, so I should see a bit of it tomorrow afternoon, all the way through Sunday morning.
I'm really hoping it's not too bad. I can't really afford to miss work next week, with the office being closed the following week. |

Mostly missed us. We got sleet and wet snow instead of freezing rain most of the time, though we did get a little. Nothing like a nice temperature inversion to make winter driving a joy.

I think Buffalo and surrounding areas were getting pummeled the last couple days, weren't they?

Kinda got hit with another 4 inches of snow Saturday, luckily no ice. The temperature has been hovering in the single digits today!

After just saying in another thread "we never get snow here this time of year", I just checked my Dashboard weather widget - and then a couple of local news station's websites - and we've got about a 40% for snow/sleet tomorrow, especially in the surrounding mountains and higher elevations.
Nice. Shows how much I pay attention to local news...I had no idea! |
