Apple just released an updated Mac Pro.
Press Release I didn't read it yet because Mac Pro's really arent my thing, but I wish they were. I guess Steve has plenty to talk about next week if he let an update get released a week before MW. Hopefully that's what this means. EDIT: 8 cores are now standard! That's crazy. Those computers are fast as all hell. EDIT 2- The post on TUAW also mentions new Xserves in the comments, Here's a link No more Twitter. It's Mastodon now. |

Same with me. If they are releasing stuff a week before MWSF they must have something really really good. Yippee

Agreed this will take care of the pro users, leaving the whole keynote for Leopard, iPhone, and the "One More Thing" sweet

Hmm... that's a pretty big announcement to do "on the low"...
BTW, Does this mean that Intel finally has independent Per-CPU FSBs? It looks like it, and this is absolutely HUGE news. Going from a shared 1333Mhz bus (666 effective per processor) to dual 1600Mhz is a massive improvement. Quote:

Wow, that wasn't what I was expecting to hear today. But definitely good news.

Waiting on the Apple Store to pop back up, but as I predicted the gap between iMac and Mac Pro has widened again... 8-cores and a higher 'standard' price of $2799. Hopefully the single Xeon model at least comes in below the old baseline of around $2100.
xMac please. |

EDIT: And they use the slower 1333 MHz processors + 667 MHz FB-DIMMs. Last edited by Eugene : 2008-01-08 at 10:41. |

Holy crap.
Well, I hope new screens, including that funky laptop port version, are in the offing then. |

Same price as the 24" iMac Extreme...
Does this leave room for the xMac? Hmm... |

Nice update but now it's tough to decide between the MacBook Pro and the Mac Pro.
Does anybody know if you can buy the Quad-Core first and put in a second CPU later? |

I don't think so / I wouldn't count on it.
I notice the RAM listed as "800MHz DDR2"... [never mind... this is new RAM] Because Crucial is listing "0" as the number of products that fit "800MHz DDR2 Fully Buffered ECC" ...into the light of a dark black night. |

Same RAM as before, only 800Mhz instead. (Meaning it still uses FB-DIMMS with ECC)

Thanks doods... I just realized that looking at the current OWC page. Looks like the newer RAM is hard to find right now. Was trying to compare prices on the street with my store-discount price...

One thing to remember though is that Intel quads are still two dual-cores on a multichip module so in effect there are two processors per bus. And on top of that the two "quads" can't talk to each other directly as Opterons currently can (and Nehalem later). |

Mmmm. Nehalem.
Still the benchmarks look pretty solid for the Penryn beasts, though the PS improvement is pretty marginal (20%), sadly for people like me. Although when you're running an old 2GHz G5 the 3GHz Penryn Mac Pro would pwn what I'm using now like nobody's b'ness. Since I'm low on expendable cash though, no time like the present to wait a bit longer. Will be a month before they ship anyway. ...into the light of a dark black night. |

Well the old boys can stop their complaining today about not having good enough video cards, since you can slap an Nvidia 8800GT in those puppies!

I have a Power Mac G5 Quad... I´ll wait for the reviews. I want to buy either an OCTO 2.8 or a 3.0 but I need to know the differences. I dont know if the 800 bucks upgrade from one to other worth it.

It's not. Well, it's not to me. IMHO, by the time that extra 200MHz matters, I'll have bought another computer.

It's 7% faster... Not something you're gonna notice. Especially not at $800(!!! )
Use the money for extra memory (not from Apple) or a 30" screen (now THAT is a noticeable improvement ) Converted 07/2005. |

Somebody told me that I could make the upgrade for the 8800GT video card and also add 4 gb -not from apple of course-

I'm trying to buy the 2.8 GHz octo right now, and the store is getting *hammered*. I can't even get through the order process. And yeah I agree that $800 to go from 2.8 to 3 GHz isn't really worth it. And the $1600 jump to 3.2 GHz probably isn't either, unless you really need every ounce of processing power.
But I love that you can get the 8800GT card now, and that you can BTO a 1 TB drive (or 4 of them), and even a 300 GB 15,000 RPM SAS drive! And that they come with a baseline 2 GB of RAM, in 2 1 GB sticks by default. Gives you more options. |

I'm not sure about the graphics card. On the PC, they need a BIOS to initialize it, Apple systems don't. Traditionally, Macs have needed special graphics cards, and it doesn't seem to change for some reason. Maybe when the PC world moves to EFI...

Of Course. What I wanted to say is that Im going to buy the 2.8 with the 8800GT and later on the 4 gb of RAM.
The only problem is that the Macpro with the 8800GT is 3-5 weeks (luckily i´ll wait a moth or so hoping that they solve that) |

If it will arrive in about a month if your order now, why wait a month and then order? Just curious.
