hi everyone.

i am a new Mac user.
i wanted to say that just from reading all the posts and such i've learned so much and i appreciate all the information being posted.

actually i have two questions

is there any program/or way to move the trash icon from the dock to the right hand side of my screen?

and i have a gig of ram from crucial and i still sometimes get the beachball. when opening up some programs.
i expected that with one gig my imac would be flying.
any thoughts or suggestions?

thanks!

Do you mean you want to remove the Trash icon from the Dock? You cannot do that. Besides, Apple had good reason to put the Trash on the Dock.

For one, other applications can use the Trash; so, a globally accessible location is greatly beneficial here. Yes, it's true. When editing your bookmarks in Safari, for example, try dragging one to the trash. Admittedly, only a few developers implement this type of functionality.

Secondly, putting it on the Dock lets Apple add that handy menu with "Empty Trash" on it!

Thirdly, and most importantly, putting the Trash on the Dock means you don't have to move other stuff out of the way to get to its icon on the desktop. Yes, Exposé makes things easier in this regard, but that's a relatively new feature and not everyone uses it.

If you insist, though, you can put an icon for the trash on the desktop in addition to having it on the Dock. Here's one such free application that does that.

Plus you can drag CDs and external drives into trash to burn them or eject them... (the icon changes) Very handy.

I gotta say - I hate that hangover from the old days. Doesn't make logical sense under OS X and is just a link to the past imho. Apart from keeping those familiar with the prior releases of the OS happy, I can't think of a decent reason why these shorcuts (drag item to trash to eject or CD to trash to burn) still exist. Brad - any thoughts on this?

Yes. You can put your dock on the right hand side of the screen. The trash will be on the bottom.

With regard to the beachball issue - what is your uptime on the computer? (ie: how long sice it was last shut down?)

Give the iMac a restart and see if that improves your situation.
