How about a thread for discussing typefaces?
A client is entertaining the idea of switching his company's wordmark to that wonderful, yet highly overused typeface Copperplate. I want to err on the side of caution on how to explain the downside of using it, as he's quite fond of the look his company had in the 1980s... but would enjoy hearing your thoughts. … |

you're making baby pirates cry!
I have to tell them that the design they want looks straight out of the 80s, but the 80s were their golden years... I fear that we're going back to the future... wait, is that PAPYRUS for the links???!!! GAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! … |

Copperplate, Papyrus and Comic Sans all in one place.
Or, as us font geeks like to refer to that: the ninth circle of hell. Last edited by 709 : 2009-11-02 at 15:50. |

Somehow the Daily Mail and Fox become ever so slightly more credible...

On a more serious note, what does everyone use as a "serious" font for academic essays and the like? Some professors absolutely require Times New Roman, which annoys me, but others merely require a traditional serif font.
I like Adobe Jenson Pro and Adobe Caslon Pro a lot. I used to like the various Garamonds a lot, but I've kind of gotten tired of them. I'm particularly fond of HTF's Requiem, which I got from a friend, but I'm not sure it's appropriate for essays (the Q's tail is quite long, for instance), and for some reason the OTF version he had doesn't produce ligatures automatically (though it has them—they need to be added manually, which is a pain). I'm rather fond of the Myriad family, myself - I find myself using Myriad Set Text a lot for stuff on my machine.
I don't use my Macs for anything work-related, so I pretty much am stuck with whatever the Windows machines in the office have installed when it comes to that. Bleargh. Tangent: I wonder if Adobe still includes copies of the Myriad Pro and Minion Pro fonts with the latest Adobe Reader installs? |

Bembo, Garamond, & Cochin. Probably in that order. I don't really use Times, unless it's required (if the only allowed alternative is Arial, that counts as "required.")
But I use sans fonts, mostly. It saddens me that Gotham and Myriad are becoming cliche. |

Helvetica for me, though. Overused, yes, but god does it looks sexy if used well. Helvetica is my bitch. System: 27" iMac i7, 2TB, 8GB RAM, Mac OS X Snow Leopard |

The best web font is Verdana. The best font for reading long articles is Times New Roman or Palatino.

Palatino FTW. It's about as perfect a serif typeface that there is (that's widely distributed).

Sans serif fonts are better for faster reading; probably because there is more distinction/distance between letters. I have used comic sans in a science talk recently... I think I have chosen the font combination for my dissertation: titles, section heads and number in times, body text in arial. as for those science talks, one wants an informal font -- any suggestions? |

ARIAL‽ Yes, I find the use of Arial even more outrageous than that of Comic Sans. So sue me. |

I used it when I was a first year grad student. Once. The most "informal" font I use these days, and rarely, would be Georgia or Garamond.

But there is no reason to ever use Arial. Ever. It basically says, "I can't afford Helvetica." and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong |
