Just configured (edu discount):

[A] 1.5 ghz g4 12" Powerbook w/1.256gb ram for $1624 ($1863 w/apple care)

[b] 1.83 ghz MacBook Pro w/2 gb ram (crucial = $340) for $2139 ($2378 w/apple care)

I currently have the dual-core 2ghz g5 w/4.5 gb ram and use an external hd. I rely heavily on Apple Mail and Adobe CS2. Would you pick system [A] or [b] and why? I'd like to make the decision within the month. Snag a powerbook now and wait for MacBook Pros to work kinks out, or waste of money?

Thanks!

A.

You have a G5, and Adobe isn't going to be universal; might as well hold out for revision b or c of MBP.

That's what I figured... that I don't want to deal with Rosetta and other makeshift solutions. How do you think performance will compare to my current setup on system A? How's the wireless connectivity on the powerbooks? Quick enough?

I have configuration A and I think it's mediocre. If I were you i'd actually get config B, because face it, the 12" is overpriced compared to the MacBook Pro.

$500 difference worth the extra power? would the extra power plus the lag with rosetta for adobe cs2 + ms office still be faster than the 12" pb? now THAT's the question!

Well, this is only for now. I assume he'd want to keep the laptop for a few years. The 12" is not going to hold up very long. I have it and it feels very underpowered.

a local store has the mbp 1.83 in stock, i'll check it out, if the lag w/rosetta is quicker than the 12" pb, i may just spring for it, taking apple care with it... money doesn't matter but i didn't care to spend that much on a laptop right now, we'll see... i'll compare the 12"pb side by side with it and decide then. maybe the mbp will floor me, who knows, time to read more forum horror stories and convince myself one way or the other!
