Recently got rid of a carpet, finally making a Roomba a real possibility. At this point there are 7,000 models and I am curious to know if they're worth it.

That really depends on your privacy stance. Most of the reboot vacuums scan your space to map it and send those maps back to HQ. Those are reported to do a great job of cleaning up your floors and keeping them clean.
The alternative is to get a dumb "bump and go" one that will literally go until it hits a wall or thinks it is going to fall down stairs and then turn at a random angle and go forward again. I've got one of those and it generally does a good job of keeping my floors cleared. Occasionally I'll come in an find it stuck under a chair or something like that. If you keep the charging base in a good spot you should be safe. Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. Exactly. Many don't care and it is "understandable" with us having "nothing to hide" and all.... but I just like my privacy more than better targeted advertisements.
But, in an attempt to not derail the thread much I can say the bump and go isn't a bad option. Don't pay the price on their site though. I got mine for around $100 or so on sale. Going into the Christmas buying season it is bound to be way less that the site lists it now. Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. The problem isn't that companies can advertise to you specifically, it's what happens when they are hacked, and it's not if but when, and that hacker may be far less kind with that information.
As for robo vacuums, as long as it's a low dust environment, go nuts. If not they just get clogged with stuff and stop because you aren't there to empty it. |

I've had a Roomba for about 3 years and it has been a life changer, especially if you have a pet. I have a dog and have no issues with clogging. I empty it 2-3 times a week and change the filter once a month and change the brushes every 3 months or so. You can get off brand replacements off of Amazon that work exactly the same. This time of year you can get amazing deals. 100% recommend.

This is going to trigger a rant. Sorry.
Roomba is one of those companies that tragically doesn't know what its purpose is supposed to be. And there's no Steve Jobs to walk in and ask them if they really want to be selling sugar water for their whole life. I don't need a robotic vacuum for my floors. Dyson, Shark, and the rest are doing a fabulous job making appliances that take care of that need. What I need a robot vacuum for is to get to places inside the house that I can't reach or access. Like that network of ducts, pipes, and vents inside the walls. The average Canadian is inside the house for most of the winter, and cleans their ducts maybe once every five years. It's an expensive service to perform, leading people to delay it as much as possible. If you could put your furnace into maintenance mode for an hour each week and a robotic cleaner went to work, people would see real health and life benefits from breathing cleaner air. Those with allergies and breathing impairments would have a real improvement in their quality of life. But by all means, let's ignore all that and continue our fascination with having a personal R2-D2 in our living room. |
