Apple Computer in just a few hours will take the wraps off its first Intel-based Mac laptop and desktop computers, reliable sources have confirmed to AppleInsider.

Inline with predictions made by AppleInsider in November, the company at this year's Macworld Expo is expected to show both a new Intel iMac (17- and 20- inch) and the first 15-inch PowerBook. However, sources say Apple has decided to change the name of the PowerBook to "Mac Book Pro."

The new iMacs, which Apple chief Steve Jobs will use to demo new iLife and iWork applications, are expected to ship immediately. The 15-inch Mac Book Pro will be shown on stage and ship sometime next month, sources said.

Jobs' opening keynote is scheduled to begin at 9:00 am pacific time.

iMacs?!? They've updated the silly things TWICE since we bought ours in September! When has that ever happened?

That's it...where's that window, I'm jumping!

Honestly, I guess they're just going to update iTunes and the iMac every two months or so, from here out? WTH?

Come summer, the iMac will be on Rev. M and we'll be using iTunes 11.

The excitement has got to people in such a degree that they need to calm down with a chillum full of ganja. Hence the ever more strange predictions.

Next up is the iBong

load of bollocks if you ask me

how could apple possibly justify another iMac update since the latest one in October whilst leaving the mini and iBook stagnating further

I agree. But somehow, I can totally imagine it happening.

Why in the world did they just not wait another 2-3 months and introduce the new iMacs with the iSights, thinner bodies, reconfigured ports AND Intel processors today?

Why spread such two large upgrades/enhancements only a couple of months from each other?

What a pisser this has to be to anyone who just bought a new iSight iMac, thinking - reasonably - "it'll be later in 2006 before they're touched again...I'm safe".

I have a tough time believing this one...

The iMac G5 is the one solid bright spot in the Mac line-up...it's totally holding its own in price/performance/features. No one's exactly clamoring for it to be "brought up to snuff" like the laptops and mini.

And even if it DID go to Intel soon, it could be done via press release or small mini-event in a few months. Why today, so close to October?

And yes...Mac Book Pro sounds really silly.

Will the new Intel towers, when they come out, be called Mac Mac Pro?

I'll believe the iMac update and powerbook rebranding when I see it.

Apple's invested a lot of time/money in the PowerBook name/mentality, not sure they'd want to chuck it all.

Now some new device with that name, that's another story.

Depends on how fast the iMac is selling. If that's Apple's top performer then they can't let it stagnate.

The iBook may not get updated until single core Yonahs come out. Single vs. dual core CPUs would be the easiest way for Apple to differentiate between the iBook and PowerBook, IMO.

I can see the PowerBook rebranding but the iMac update is pure bunk.

I call shenanigans.

Nothing's wrong with Mac Book Pro. PowerBook was only used because it came from the PowerPC architecture anyway...

Mac Book Pro may not be as good but it's still better than the QVX9002 from Dell or whoever.

As has been said before, the PowerBook predates the PowerPC chip.

Chris, the PowerBooks were called PowerBooks before we even knew what PowerPC was.

And you call yourself a campus rep.

Fine, that may be true, but my main point is that the PowerBook name and Mac Book Pro are still better than names like Inspiron 48Z76B4H. Agreed?

This is what I am wondering.

Why not throw out some BS during rehearsals so the speculators get it all wrong??!!

We will know soon enough....

So the iBook would be just a plain old Mac Book then?

Gah. Whatever.

I'm sorry but "Mac Book Pro" is a horrible name. There is no reason for them to even rename the PowerBook.

Pissed is a nice way of saying how iMac owners really feel.
Cheated, ripped off and f*cked are more likely.

I know I just picked up a rev B. iMac thinking any new Intel iMac is about a year away. I'd feel worse if I picked up a new iSight iMac. Regardless, any G5 iMac are still smokin' (no pun intended) machines and should last me a good 3 to 4 years.

However, I'm guessing the rumour is incorrect. But an Intel Powerbook wouldn't surprise me. We've all heard about the iBooks being the ones to go Intel first, but I'm thinking Apple really needs to rejuvenate it's pro-laptop line. It's top of the line lowly 1.67 Ghz has been the butt of many jokes, so hopefully this will be rectified shortly.

we don't yet know the full details, and I don't want to add an I told you so, but...

the second Steve made the switch announcement, I though any PPC based mac made a bad buy for people who already had any reasonably new mac (last 2-3 years vintage), and this is why.

That said. Your iMac should continue to provide great service for the nest 3-4 years with all "current" software, so you should be completely functional till it's time to replace this iMac, resale might suck though...
