Hi there,

So, like being a complete fool, I restarted my PB without unmounting the External Drive. It was physically connected throughout this time but now I wonder if it has been damaged at all. Is there anyway to check? It does appear ok but I am a little paranoid.

I ran Disk Utility and got this:

Is there anything still to worry about?

Regards

90%* of the time, forgetting to unmount a USB or FireWire device does no harm whatsoever.

I forget to do it frequently, and have only had a problem once (which was repairable).

I never unmount my drives when I reboot. I haven't had a problem with the drives either.

OS X will automatically unmount attached drives in the shutdown process.

That's what I thought too. In fact, Mac OS has unmounted the drives since... always. (Remember when the little disky would pop out when you'd shut down the Mac LC? I do.)

It's when you do a hard shut as the drive is being read from / written to that you should be concerned.

You had me at asl

Well, I figured Jason was referring to non-clean reboots or the likes.

A normal reboot naturally doesn't hurt at all.

From his post I figured that it was a regular reboot, but accidentally forgot to unmount the drive. But yea, a hard shutdown isn't good for either drive. HFS+ is a journaling filesystem which helps in these situations, but isn't perfect.
