I was wondering how the Nvidia 5200 compares to ATI cards. Is it equivilent to the ATI Radeon 9000?

The 5200 doesn't have a direct ATI equivalent. The GeForce 5200 has basically all the same graphical features as the other cards in the GeForce 5 (FX) series. It's programmable and supports Pixel Shader 2.0, so it works with Core Image. ATI's direct competitor to the GeForce 5200, the Radeon 9200, is about as fast but it's not as advanced and thus it doesn't support Core Image.
Actually, in some ways, the Radeon 9200 is faster than the GeForce 5200. Another thing to keep in mind: GeForce 5200 = GeForce 5500 Radeon 9200 = Radeon 9250 = Radeon 9100 = Radeon 9000 = Radeon 8500 I guess if you want an ATI card that has the same features but also performs about the same, you could take the Radeon 9550SE (NOT the standard Radeon 9550, which is significantly faster). The 9550SE has the same features as other video cards of that generation, but it uses a crippled 64-bit memory bus that should bring the performance level down to the equivalent of the 5200. In general, though, the 9550 is faster than the 5200. |
