So here I am posting a music request again. This time, I'm looking for music with that really "cool" sound. The trouble is, I can't define it by genre. I do have a few examples, though: "I Turn My Camera On", "Music is my Hot, Hot Sex", and "The Way I Are."
These are fairly different kinds of artists... Spoon being Alternative (kind of), CSS being Dance (kind of), and Timbaland being hip hop (kind of). The thing that defines them seems to be a strong beat, but not all aggressive and angry--upbeat and happy, to an extent. Maroon 5 has this sound in a lot of their songs, but I can't reference one directly because I don't know them well enough. Make sense? Where can I find some more "stereotypically cool sounding music?" |

I go through this phase every once in a while when I'm looking for new music.
Typically, I just go to Pandora and type in a song that I like and let it go through and play different songs that it decides are similar. I've found a lot of new music this way. No more Twitter. It's Mastodon now. |

Huh. This is harder than the last one, I'd say. "Cool" is so subjective. I'll search through my iTunes library and get back to you later though.

Coolest ever are Steely Dan (and maybe Fun Lovin' Criminals) of course.

Ronald Jenkees is Timbaland's boy. Honest.
If you are not in need of lyrics all the time, nothing is cooler than Thievery Corporation. Just my humble opinion. |

I have a suggestion...this guy named Jehro has a cool sound that doesn't really fall into a genre. Try: Sweet, Everything, All I Want, and/or Master Blaster. I guess you could classify it as Carribean Soul.

Groove Armada, Morcheeba, The Getaway People (unfortunately no longer together), Gabriel Rios,...
EDIT: On second thought and after listening to your examples, maybe these might tickle your fancy: Kate Ryan (1), Kate Ryan (2), Serebro, maybe Rihanna, ethnic but cool Hadise, Moloko, Katérine Or basically most upbeat songs played on this radio station. |

Steely Dan and Thievery Corporation: agreed, both are architects of cool. And in a less consistent sense, so are Towa Tei and Vanessa Daou.

Men, Women, & Children - Photosynthesis: ignore the shitty animation; this is the only full copy of the song I could find on the youtubes.
Freezepop - Sprite: skip to 1:32 for the actual song, and again ignore the video (unless you want to be creeped the fuck out) I would also recommend Mika, but you probably already know of him via Apple's advertising. |

The problem with stereotypically good music is that it quickly begins to feel like it wasn't made with any other specific purpose.
Example: A "hip" cafe owned by some local lower nobility has a DJ playing live while you sit and enjoy your cognac and coffee. Everything is cool; the coat of arms the furniture and the comely waitresses. But it soon becomes too much and soon you start noticing all the things the place has in common with various wanna-be clubs you have seen across Eastern Europe. You simply come to the conclusion that they are trying so hard it's getting corny. Surely that wasn't the impression the first time I heard Gnarls Barkly's Crazy, but after hearing it about a hundred times I got pretty tired of it and began to associate it with "canned taste". My advice would be to forget cool and just play what makes you happy. |

Some laid back lounge music; something that doesn't get too loud or complicated to interrupt the conversation?

Thats good, too, but sometimes I want that really "cool" sound like I talk about in my first post above. "Crazy" is another example of this "cool" sound. Its not necessarily lounge, background music, but something about the sound just screams cool to me. This isn't my favorite type of music, but one type I'd like to get more of.

Burial - Untrue
This is probably the coolest thing to be released in a while. It the best background music I've heard in a while. It's so cool it's hard to imagine that someone could even conceive this type of stuff let alone record it. I'll dig through my iTunes library tonight for more cool stuff but that's all I've got off the top of my head. |

Good call 'furball. So good, I had to dig out my copy for playing while making the dinner.
I'd also recommend Mezzanine by Massive Attack and Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space by Spiritualized (all except track 12, which is a definite conversation killer - 17 minutes of noise) |

For just chill background music, I like a lot of the putumayo presents discs. It's a nice touch of the unexpected in your music collection.
