Our Wii has only one remote that will function as player 1 - no other controllers can turn the machine on or operate the main menu. Is there any way to pair another controller with the main menu screen?

Since we are here, I'll ask another question about the wii controller. Can I control all the wii games with the "classic controller" ? Like in case of extreme laziness(is that or for any other reason

No, you can't control the wii games with the classic controller. But you don't need to be unlazy because the classic controller just plugs into the wiimote so you'd have it anyway.
If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

There's a red button on your Wiimote where the battery goes. There's also one somewhere on the Wii, although I forget where offhand. Press the two at approx. the same time to have the remote paired with your Wii, so you don't have to add them each time you turn it on.

By the way, what alcimedes posted is in at least two of the booklets that come with your Wii - the system manual and quick start (or whatever it's called).

Yeah, I didn't read either one though and it took me about two days before I realized there was no way that Nintendo intended for the controller sync. to be that big of a pain in the ass.

Also, after the wii-motes have been idle long enough to go to sleep - the first one you pick up and press a button on will become the #1 wii-mote for that session.
So if you've got those color rubber covers on them, and you don't want to have to use the girly pink one, just pick up a manly blue one first and press a button on it. Do you know where children get all of their energy? - They suck it right out of their parents! |

I need it since we're going to take away the Wii from my brother, and I still want to use it. It'll really suck for him when he sees that the "Only player 1 controller" is missing. I have my own personal Wiimote.

If you press the home button on a wiimote and then click on the icon of a wiimote in the bottom left you can choose 'reconnect'. When you press this, you simply press buttons on wiimotes in the order you want them to be in (ie the first wiimote you press a button on will be player one etc).
