Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) – An Air Force fighter jet and one of President Barack Obama's official planes on Monday flew low over the Statue of Liberty in an approved photo opportunity that startled some New Yorkers who have memories of the September 11 attacks.

New York City officials notified some businesses but not all city agencies or the general public. People in New York remain sensitive to such incidents in lower Manhattan, site of the 2001 attacks involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Many people left their buildings, and stock prices extended losses at the time.

The U.S. Air Force, which operates the president's plane, said the "aerial photo mission" involved an F-16 fighter jet escort and one of the Boeing 747s designated as Air Force One when the president is aboard. Obama was not on board.
I dunno... I get the 9/11 connection and all, but it's an Air Force One jet with a fighter escort, for crying out loud. I'd just be like "Hmm, that's odd", take a photo, and keep going.

*facepalm*

In related news, pork product sales have plummeted for fear of 'swine flu'.

Humans suck at rational risk assessment.

Seriously... if the fighters are flying formation, that's the sign of a short leash. Relax nimrods.

If it were a bad plane, the fighters would be well behind him and... y'know... shooting.

*prrof the govvernement werre behind 9/11!!!!!elevety!!@*

Duh.

I think the point is that it's not immediately recognisable as Air Force One*, especially from a distance, so a low-flying jet in NYC would potentially be a little disconcerting. I can see why you'd be worried.

Alert, sure. Keeping an eye on it, yeah.

But actively *worried*?

Americans are becoming quite vag-like in their tendancies. Every little thing scares us or angers us (I'm sorry... outrages us), or offends our delicate sensibilities. It's really frickin sad.

I don't know, guys. Remember the immediate aftermath of 9/11? As planes everywhere were rushing to land wherever they could, the ones that took a little longer got fighter escorts. And their escorts weren't there to protect them... they were tasked to shoot down the planes if they were hijacked, to prevent any further attacks.

I'm not saying I'd panic, but I can see why it would make some people nervous.

That was coming up on eight years ago. There hasn't been a repeat. I think the closest we've had was a guy in Canada who flew to Missouri in a Cessna, escorted the entire way. Ooh, scary.

If I'm at the beach, should I be worried if I hear a prop plane, because of Pearl Harbor?

I dunno, I just don't get jumping at shadows, and working yourself up into a tizzy over every little thing in life.

(And just for the record, the folks up here in NYC are the most neurotic, nervous, paranoid group of people I have yet to meet as a collective culture. It's stunning, particularly when couple with an arrogant streak that comes from proclaiming themselves citizens of the greatest city in the world. Go figure. I predict people here will remain 'sensitive to such [non]incidents' until the end of time.)

Yeah, they probably should have notified the city officials that they were going outside normal airspace channels, no argument there.

But jeez, it just feels like a self-feeding fear frenzy. NYCers keep getting told they should be afeered, so they are, so it gets reported, so they are, so it gets reported, so they are... and it's all kind of pointless.

Edit: Oh *really*... http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?se...cal&id=6782403

"The Defense Department "coordinated the flight with FAA," FAA spokeman Jim Peters said, "and we made the notifications to the city of New York, as well as the 311 and 911 centers, the NYPD, New Jersey State Police and various operations centers in the New York area."

City officials were notified, but not the general public.

"The flight of a VC-25 aircraft and F-16 fighters this morning was authorized by the FAA for the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty with directives to local authorities not to disclose information about it, but to direct any inquiries to the FAA Air Traffic Security Coordinator," a police statement read.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says he is furious that the federal government flew the planes near Ground Zero. Bloomberg says the flyover so near the World Trade Center site showed "poor judgment" and was insensitive. He says he is furious that the NYPD and another city agency were notified last week, but did not tell him."

So it looks like the ire should be aimed at the local departments who decided not to inform the public.

I think lots of things work like that, actually. See: The economy.

But yeah, I don't think anyone can argue that if it's a problem, seven years later, for people to look at two san serif "l"s, the terrorists have officially won.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

When you live in New York, were here on 9/11, and see a 747 flying very low with fighter planes behind....well, I think the cause for concern should be obvious.

Okay, I'll bite. From an emotional response, fine. People have to get over their traumas at their own pace, and some never do. Sad, but true.

But from a *rational* response... why? Why should it be different rationally than being in Chicago? Or if you hadn't been there that day? Or any number of other factors, that if any one of them changed, would somehow alter a rational risk assessment?

The bigger problem is that you are using taxpayers money to fly a jumbo jet and fighter jet, which must have cost tens of thousands, for a shitty photo shoot.

At least you've got your economic head screwed on straight.

What I don't understand is the need for an "approved photo opportunity" involving Obama's plane, military fighters and the Statue of Liberty.

Haven't these people heard of digital manipulation? Instead of incurring tens of thousands of dollars in expenses and polluting New York's airspace, couldn't they have just bought a copy of Pixelmator for $59?

Edit: Fahrenheit beat me to it.

I'd be slightly freaked out by a low-flying jet in any city.
In fact, I was: see here.

And nothing of that nature has ever actually happened to me.

Usually I agree with you Kick, but this time, I don't. I think they had a right to legitimately be a little disconcerted by lowflying aircraft.

Well, like I said, keeping an eye on it is one thing.

Evacuating buildings seems a whole other level of response, IMO.

Don't worry Kickaha, I got your back. Unless the spectators eye sight is so horrible that they can't tell it's Air Force One (minus Mr President) and a US fighter they shouldn't have been concerned. Emotional scaring or not. How hard is it to recognize? People in other countries know what that plane is.

What's wrong with advertising and marketing? Companies do it all the time but if the US Military does it it's wasteful? Who sat in the board meeting at Boeing and said they were dumb for doing a live photo op? Lets put things in perspective people.

Wellllllll, if a company I was a shareholder in was in dire financial straights, and spending money on photo ops that could have been done much, much more cheaply, I'd be looking askance at them as well. It's just not financially responsible.

Same here, IMO. I don't think there was much of a need for this to be done 'live'. *shrug*

Sorry, turtle, you had my back, and I went and moved.

They could've Photoshopped or CGI'd the thing. Saved a lot of time, money, logistical hassle, wigging folks out, etc.

I think Toys R Us has some photoshop experts that are available. Save the government money, too, because they can put it together from random clip art.

I've applied for a job at the Toys R Us art department, and I sent them some of my best work. Yeah, it's not a dragon pool, but it's pretty damn good (I spent about four hours masking that plane out...you can't tell it's a composite image!! ). This would've done the job, and saved a lot of work and hassle.

The lens flare is a criminally underused aspect of Photoshop (more people should put it in their final renderings). Here, it makes the sky look bright and sunny. That's the kind of stuff you learn when you've used Photoshop as long as I have. It's all about the little details and touches.

Yeah, I need to go back and work on some of the coloring and balance. I had the two planes reflecting in the water, but it just looked way too fake and idiotic. Ruined the realism and made it look obviously Photoshopped, so I took it out.
