Looks like Western Digital has been working hard on making bigger 2.5" drives as of late. So much for rumors that Seagates 640GB would be the biggest ones coming out this year! WD released two drives with 333GB platters, one 750GB one and a 1TB one. They wont fit in your Macbook/Macbook Pro though since they are 12.5mm rather than 9.5mm drives. So for us Mac notebook users the Seagate may be the option, but I bet it wont be long before we see slim 9.5mm versions.

Too bad they're Western Digital.

Also, how would one have a 750GB drive with 333GB platters? i r confused.

Better than Seagate after their 1 TB drive debacle!

Easy, it is the same drive (both have three 333GB platters), but the 750GB one has less heads or a firmware difference that locks out the rest of the last platter.

WD makes crappy external drive cases, but I've never had anything but good experience with WD drives in terms of reliability. I have WD drives that are over 10 years old and they are still going strong. The only thing I don't like about WD drives is how loud they are. I go for Hitachi drives because they are quieter and tend to be cheaper.

Here is the relevant Western Digital page. Not many notebooks accept 12.5 mm drives though, so it may as well have 6 platters and store 2 TB.

At around $200, the price is a laugh. You can buy an entire computer for that price these days, or a couple of 7200 rpm 500 GB Seagates.

This reminds me of Fujitsu's early 500 GB drive that was also 12.5 mm thick, arriving just before the others got 9.5 mm 500 GB drives on the market. Maybe a hint of panic at expected announcements from Seagate or others.

All that said, it's good to finally see a move beyond 500 GB, even if it's achieved by cheating.

Keep in mind that notebooks aren't the only application for notebook drives. They could be used in 2.5" external cases for mobile storage. Personally, I wouldn't want more than a 500GB drive in my notebook anyway.

Or, like, PlayStation 3s. A 1TB Blu-ray player/next-gen console/wireless media center for $500 (after Sony drops the f@&%ing price, which they will any day now...) isn't a bad deal at all.

You could flip the included 80GB drive on eBay and use it to by that fancy-pants Bluetooth remote and an HDMI cable, and then you'd be all set.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

The Scorpio Blue 750GB HDD is available now at $189.99, the 1TB drive is only available now in the My Passport Essential SE USB drive for $249.99.
$249 and only available with an enclosure? Really lame.

WD enclosures suck, but I've never had an actual WD drive fail on me.

So I guess that means it wont fit in my MacBook Pro?

Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end.

Nope, like most other notebooks the MBP can only accept 9.5mm drives, as I stated in my first post.

AIUI, the 17-inch does support 12.7mm drives, but the 15- and 13-inch don't.

These will be good for the new energy efficient NAS using 2.5" drives.

SS 439 Pro

SS 839 Pro

DS 409Slim

If you can get a TB per drive bay and save a significant amount of power then high capacity 2.5" HDD have more to look forward to than just laptops.

I hope Seagate and Hitachi follow the lead here so that pricing comes down sooner rather than later.

I cannot understand why you would want that big a hard drive in your notebook. Now I know I posted this, but topic, but from my perspective a 500GB internal drive is plenty for most projects. Storing stuff you don't need all the time on an external, and faster 3.5" drive, makes more sense to me. I know it isn't always practical to have an external though.

500GB for files and data. 1TB for all my movies.

Duh!

I am quite serious. If I had a 1.5TB, I'd partition that into a 500 and a 1TB and fill that sweet baby with so many personally ripped DVD's (My own collection) I'd be the envy of every Jerry and Jane on the block. I'd be a walking mobile video library with more TV shows and movies in my hand than most people have on their entertainment room shelves.
