Ok, so I just got my new MBP last night. I installed BootCamp and XP. When I was messing around in XP I noticed that there is a red light shining out of the microphone port. The laptop seemed really hot at the moment. I left it go for a while and eventually booted back into OSX. I looked back down and the light was gone. What's going on???

Thanks!

That's optical (digital) audio. As Apple states:
Quote:
The Digital Audio (S/PDIF) output LED is always on when running Windows XP. How do I turn it off?

The Digital Audio output can be manually disabled by opening the SigmaTel control panel and deselecting the Enable Digital Output checkbox in the Advanced tab.
On Mac OS X, on the other hand, optical audio gets activated and deactivated automatically depending on what kind of cable (if any) is plugged in.

Heat has nothing to do with it, by the way. As stated here, power management works differently on Windows.

So, it probably wasn't a good idea to stare directly into the light? Should I have my retina's examined???

It's an LED, not a laser. LEDs generally don't hurt your eyes.

Duh! Yeah, I guess if I would have read closer I would have noticed the LED thing.

Thanks

you can turn it off in windows if you go into control panels, and then i believe there's an SPDIF control panel (or something along those lines)

Brad, quit fibbing. Everyone knows LED stands for Laser (Eye Destroyer).

Jeez, talk about irresponsible.
