I'm beginning to plan a major redesign of a blog that I admin, and have been browsing the web a lot for hot pieces of ass web design. I've stumbled across some absolutely gorgeous ones, and some unique takes on popular forms of webpages. I'm not so much looking for content... but rather how the design compliments it.

The Snowsuit Effort - My new favorite website. Not only amazingly designed and presented, but incredible and breathtaking content.

Jason Santa Maria - Cool analog to a book.

Warpspire - Interesting front page... an amalgam of all his sections.

So, what are some sites that you think are absolutely amazingly designed for their application, or offer interestingly unique design?

(I've only listed blog-esque pages, but I don't mean to limit others to that)

Not really. I couldn't "see" the down arrow on his bio until I resized my browser window. That's not smart.

Oh yeah, and the seizure-inducing bright flashes on the following page don't help it either.

*shrug*

Primary Rules of Stellar Web Design:
  1. Make it accessible to all users. Don't forget that some people have to use screen readers, enlarged fonts, altered colors, and non-mouse pointing devices.
  2. Don't annoy users with flashy, high-speed graphics.

That about covers the basics!

As far as ease-of-use and logical layouts, I have found that the English newspaper the Guardian has a great website. Quick, no nonsense, lots of easily identifiable and accessible information. And that's its purpose, no?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/

While it's not the flashest of web pages, it blows away most sites that I visit in a given day.

I used to be against it, but with the new text rendering engine, I am starting to support using flash. I especially like the ability to display fonts even if the user doesn't have them on his/her own computer. That is a god send I think.

Yeah, it's just a shame the Guardian's journalistic content is such poor quality. And I hate any website that allows those adverts that open up unprompted right across the middle of the page. They suck.

It's one thing not to agree with it, as I sometimes do, but calling it poor quality is wrong. Anyway, back on thread.

I have to agree - a very powerful message and interesting too. Some of the sotries and some of the faces are incredible, they just have life written all over them.

Nice choice

Here are a few of my fav's.
Nova
Evolution
disclaimer: I worked on the evolution web site.

There are really very few sites that I like. I guess that I like easy-to-navigate, noncomplicated and understated web sites.

I really like the look of Binary Bonsai. Others may not, but I think its a really nice simple design.

It has certainly influenced the appearance of my blog and the redsign that i am in the process of.

Burton, the snowboard manufacturer, has had a really slick site (at least design-wise). It does require Flash -- I think -- but at least it runs smoothly, and I really, really dig its style.

That's the first that came to my mind.

Ooh, I like that one. Very nice, with some AJAX-y stuff too. I need to learn how to do that

I've never been a big fan of Flash based websites. It just allows for some very horrible things... like that 'scrollable' text area that only scrolled when you hovered over the up/down arrows - arrows that could render off your page.
