This is ridiculous. Apple's UK pricing for the Mac Mini is completely absurd. For the Core Solo model:

US Price: $599
UK Price: $781 (£449)

Core Duo Model:

US Price: $799
UK Price: $1049 (£599)

Who's the one who comes up with this crap? I was looking forward to a new Mac Mini for the same price as the old one.

I agree with you on this, the pricing is simply absurd. It would cost less to buy one there and get it shipped over probs , hopefully as availability goes up, the prices should go down.....

I think your 17% VAT has something to do with it. Remember, the UK prices you quote have VAT added. The US prices however, do not have US sales tax added.

So, we remove 17% VAT = 383.76 ($667.52) or 511.97 ($890.53) BP. Add a conservative 6% sales tax to the US prices and you get $634.94 and $846.94. Those are quite comparable prices.

Next time, take in the taxman's take before you go ranting about prices.

[edit]
UK VAT is 17.5% so the new prices are:

382.13 ($664.68)
509.79 ($886.74)

So, forget adding US sales tax and we have a price difference of $65 on the low end and $87 on the high end models. What causes this difference? I don't know, but it's not the hundreds of dollars espoused in the original post.

You completely neglected sales tax, importing costs, EU customs, localization costs, etc. This has been brought up so many times it's not funny any more.

But now you're comparing the UK price without tax to the US price with tax ...

The UK mini prices seems to be bouncing about, I've spotted a "from £449" a "from £499" and a "from £359"

On the student UK site the advert at the top of the store says $599.

The site lists "from £499" and some images say "from £449". Let's hope it's the former.

I was looking forward to getting a Mac Mini at the old price (£300'ish for the base model) at some point in the future, but at the new price (over £100 more than the G4 models as far as I can tell!) there's nothing to make me want to get one anymore, I'll just put up with my noisy PC when I'm at home for a few more years.

Why aren't they selling old PowerPC mini's in parallel like they are doing with the powerbook and iMac?

i wondered that too - perhaps you'll have to go through the refurbished route for one now.

I'd go with a refurb anyway, unless you wanted to BTO. If you were alright with the old model, go for a refurb. I bought mine refurbished and it's in great condition.

A few people at work have bought macs from the refurb store in the past and so far I've never seen any problems with the equipment they get, in fact most of it looks untouched and is most likely brand new.

I guess the G4 Mini's from the refurb store will just be clearing out the back stock. I just wish I had the cash to go to the refurb store (I was thinking 12 months down the line I would get a mini for the home).
