I'm so glad Apple has finally acknowledged this issue with iMac G5s. I feel better now, because this has always been in the back of my mind since I got my machine. My machine is not in the list affected computers, so I hope I will have many years of carefree operation on this iMac.

I'm not sure if I fully understand the serial number ranges. For example, if W8435-W8522 means all serials between such numbers, then mine (W8519) falls within the range.

However, my model is 2GHz, and this notice says that affected machines are 1.6GHz and 1.8GHz.

So, I don't really understand if my unit could be affected or not...

If there's any question than simply call Apple and ask. They'll be able to help you out.

I got a little bit confused too. Mine was bought in July and is a rev b. The serial starts with W8519 so is in the range and also a 20" model. However "The models affected were sold from September 2004 to June 2005" - I was outside that slightly but it is still in the range! surely serials are consecutive?

If Apple uses more than one plant each plant may have their own unique serial number sequence. So while each plant would use consecutive serial numbers they may be shipped in non-consecutive order depending on which plant fills what order.

It seems that the 2.0GHz models are not affected, even if their serial numbers fall in the listed ranges. In fact, I opened my iMac, and all capacitors are K-shaped, except a couple of Y-shaped ones, but no X-shaped at all.

My impression is that Apple didn't mention the 2.0GHz models in the notice because they aren't affected by the problem.
