Here's the situation I have:

I'm on vacation trying to fix my friend's PC. I've restored it from scratch so need to update Windows XP. Currently, I'm connecting to the internet on my MBP through the neighbor's wireless. The PC doesn’t have a wireless card, so I'm trying to use Internet Connection Sharing to pass the connection to the PC via the MBP's built-in Ethernet. I've searched the forums and know that I need to have the Personal Web Sharing enabled as well as Internet Sharing from Airport to Built-In Ethernet. This is done, and still no love. I'm connecting the two computers with a non-crossover cable (don't have one at this time). I know that the MBP can auto sense the cable type and react accordingly, but I don't believe that the PC can.

So...

1. Is this software setup correct?
2. Do I need a crossover cable?
3. Am I attempting something completely asinine?

Thanks!

I had the same problem when I used my Powerbook to connect my TiVo. My problem was fixed when I turned the firewall off in System Preferences.

Just tried that, still didn't work. Thanks though!

*edit* There's no firewall on the PC either.

On the G5 manually set the IP Address, Subnet Mask & Router.

The IP Address should be 192.168.2.2
The Subnet should be 255.255.255.0
And the Router should 192.168.2.1

On the G4 manually set the IP Address & Subnet Mask (for the Ethernet connection)

The IP Address should be 192.168.2.1
The Subnet should be 255.255.255.0
And the Router should blank

If that still doesn't work you can try to specify the DNS servers on the G5

you can use
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
Use the PowerBook settings for your MBP, and use the G5 Settings for the PC

I'm not sure, but I always thought that both sides needed to be autosensing in order for you to be able to use a non-crossover cable from computer to computer.

Nope. Only one end needs autosensing.

I tried what you suggested this afternoon with no success. I think I'm going to tell him to either get a wireless card, or spend a week downloading updates over dial-up.

Thanks for the help!
