My new 17" MBP just arrived!

Now how do I verify the HDD is 7200rpm? I checked the Apple profiler, it doesn't say the speed of the drive. Profile in Hardware Test also doesn't mention that.

How can I verify the drive is indeed 7200 rpm?

EDIT: Yes I did order the 160GB 7200rpm HDD option.

Thanks

You could always grab the model # from the profile and google the results.

I thought there might be a easier way to find out. Well never mind, I'm going to try that.

FWIW, it worked for both of my drives.

Okay... first off, pull that sucker from the machine. Then, hook it back up with a really long cable so it's still running. Got it? Good.

Now, let it spin up, and then pry the case apart so you see the platter spinning. Touch it with your finger. If you lose up to the first knuckle, it's a 5400. Up to the second knuckle, a 7200. If the whole finger, congrats! You got a 10k!

Alternatively you cut put your ear against the casing and listen very carefully. A 5400 rpm drive produces a tone comparable to the base tone of a low pitched male talking voice, a 7200 rpm drive sounds considerably more female.

If you don't hear anything, shake it 'til it screams.

If System Profiler does not report the rotation speed, copy and paste the model number from System Profiler into Google. The searches should reveal the model's specs. Had to do that before for a few drives myself.

You mean that's harder than starting a thread here?

Brad! Please make it harder to start threads so people quit being lazy!

It's even easier than that - just highlight the model #, right click and say "search in google."
