Do we have a thread for discussing recycling of old hardware? If not, here one be!

LASER PRINTER

In the great electronics fry-up of 2021 we said goodbye to our low cost laser printer.

With the replacement in place I tracked down a local electronics recycler that will accept the device.

I know that it's a best practice to remove hard drives from old computers, but is there ANYTHING in a laser printer that might have cached data from previous printouts that could somehow kick up personal information to a scraping organization?

Since there's no hard drive in the machine I suspect that I'm fine to just do a simple hand-off.

Still, Reagan's "Trust, but verify" phrase rings through my head.

I think you're fine.

FWIW, we take recycled Macs and peripherals (and the occasional PC heap) here at the shop and turn them over to PC Recyclers of Idaho.

Unlikely that a printer has stored any data, everything would go through the printers RAM, but that wouldn't store anything longer than it took to do that job, and the RAM would have been fried along with everything else.

Yeah, there is some cache storage in a printer but nothing like a HDD/SSD. Anything that you would have sent to the printer as a job is long gone. Arguably a portion of the last page printed could be pulled from the drum, but that is a stretch and not something someone would do for you and your household.

Hi, there is some possibility that the Ram is storing in the printer. May be a part eventually creates them.
