I need to get two external hard drives and I am wondering which is better. I "have" to get it from Amazon because I will be using gift vouchers. My options are
Western Digital 320 GB USB/Firewire External Hard Drive $242 IOMEGA Black Series 250GB USB/Firewire External Hard Drive $214 The WD is a better deal $0.75/GB compared to the $0.85/GB of the Iomega. But I was wondering if the Iomega drive is a better drive in general. Macworld seems to think the tripple interface version of the drive is the best drive ever. Oh btw, any other recommendations would be great. One drive will be used for my weekly backups using Retrospect. The other drive is where I will be downloading movies onto. I am looking for 250GB minimum and it has to be from Amazon. thank you portable: MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD | personal: PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz, 6GB RAM, 6TB HD | work: MacBook Pro 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD | car: Alpine iDA-W407 with black iPod 80GB | pocket: iPhone 3GS with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro's |

If you are choosing between the two, I would go for the 320GB - the additional 70GB of storage will be better for you than the extra $28 in your pocket. If you are looking at others, I use a triple interface LaCie 500GB - it's quiet and the FW800 is lightning fast.

Would be nice to know what brand of drive Iomega is using. I don't trust WD.

I was actually interested in getting the Lacie 250GB drive first since it was only $150 but the reviews on amazon were very bad and it scared me away from Lacie

I have two Lacie external triple drives (25o and 300 MB) and they are fantastic, esp. at FW800 speed.

get this one:
http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4430956 320 gb Firewire/USB for $169 after rebate. I have one, well not as large.... They are nice hard drives, aluminum and fanless, so you don't have to hear stupid fans. They are also bootable. If you buy Acomdata DO NOT buy the ones that have "push-button" backup, they are not bootable for some reason. The box doesn't say so but the manual does... go figure. It's not from amazon but it's a heck of a deal. |

Hard drives are luck of the draw. I've had 2 Maxtor SATA 250GB drives die in my G5 PM. I'm running 3 Maxtor ATA 250-300 drives, 1 Seagate 80GB drive and a WD 320 drive at home and have not had a problem. Now, the IBM deathstars......
I won't buy anything from Iomega. I've never had anything but trouble from them. |

anyone tried Cavalry harddrives? I found one on amazon, 250GB for like $160. Uses Maxtor harddrive, 7200RPM plus 16MB cache. Ugly case though.
