So that's what I found this afternoon as I started to work on replacing the window. I knew there was water damage, just had no idea how much.

That sucks, good thing you got it before too much mold started to grow. It can really get bad in a hurry if the mold spreads on the back of the drywall.

An exterior wall to boot. Got enough free weekends between now and when the snow flies (read: sticks) to take care of it?

Well, I just had the siding redone and the exterior wall was supposed to be replaced. I'm thinking that if i play my cards right they'll replace it (like they were supposed to) for free. I'll start with the carrot, end with the stick if necessary.

The interior work will be pretty easy once I get access to the exterior wall. At this point we're just trying to decide if we fix things back to what they were or if we upgrade the entire bathroom.

Houses are a never ending series of projects it seems like. Thankfully I like fixing stuff. Fixing houses and cars is a lot more satisfying than computers. Sometimes I think I went into the wrong field.

Then I spend a day working on a house or a car and I remember why they're just hobbies.

Hi Alcimides,

You might consider using Durarock -- a concrete-board substrate -- instead of drywall when it comes time to rebuild those walls, especially the walls of your tub surround. Durarock is impervious to water, and it is an excellent substrate for affixing ceramic tile, etc.

Also, in the case of ceramic tile, I would use a latex hardening agent in the grout mixture; as well, I would take care to apply a sealant to all grout joints, after they've cured properly.

(Hmmm, seems funny to offer such advice in a Mac forum.)

I have a feeling I'm going to see something similar when I rip out my shower in the next coupla' months. We use steel studs down here, but the mold is going to be something awful...

Yeah that's a window. As for why someone put an window that opens in the center of a full shower is beyond me. Seems like an idea that was destined for failure, but hey what do I know?

Perfecting_Zero Yeah, I was checking out that Durarock last night. The only problem is/was I don't know anyone that's used it, so I wasn't sure how seriously to take its claims of being impervious to water. In theory drywall should be fine, since water shouldn't be getting in the wall.

I think the reality is that anything I can put in there that would cut down on possible damage will be a good thing.

Really? I haven't seen a bathroom or room with water exposure that hasn't used Durarock in a long time. It's pretty much the norm now. It does the trick.

Is Durarock the green stuff? Lowes calls it Greenboard or something.

No, greenboard is almost as bad as sheetrock. Durarock is like cement. Our house was built over 25 years ago, so it's no shock to me that it's sheetrock.

The fact that there's a window there doesn't surprise me--I've seen quite a few like this in older houses, plus I believe housing codes stipulate that there be at least one air vent from each bathroom to the outside, be it a window or ductwork. I'm more surprised to see regular panes of glass in the windows rather than something frosted (especially in the city/burbs, where I assume Alcimedes lives).
