There was a 10 page (currently) discussion at another forum that someone I work with runs, and I did one post to give my $.02, but I was curious about you guys, who are needless to say, a little less nerdy. Probably more geeky, but less nerdy.

Difficult.
Ninjas are obviously the Freakin' Sweetest Thing In The Universe⢠but my status as a Flying Spaghetti Monsterist obliges me to vote Pirates. I think, on balance, Ninjas are cooler, but one should never underestimate the importance of the Pirate to the Global Climate. |

Ninjas are better than Pirates, but I only voted for Ninjas because their was no option for Zombies! Zombies are cooler than Pirates and Ninjas combined!

Since I spent all of yesterday parading around a small town with 200+ pirates I'm ready for a major change-up. Could we add Eskimo Fishermen to the poll? There needs to be more romanticization of Eskimos. Murbot, got any pictures of Eskimo hotties on sealskin rugs?

As usual, ninjas are going to win this poll, because many people think ninjas are 'cool', and they want to be associated with that particular aura.
However, when you get right down to it, ninjas are quintessential examples of sneaky effing bastards, and they are really nothing more than contract killers. They certainly don't play fair; they generally work only at night, like vampires; they don't care who their victims are, so they are essentially amoral; they spend all their spare time keeping in perfect shape so they can scale walls and leap high into the air to administer fatal kicks to the throat - so they must be pretty insufferable to be around: always eating the right thing, seldom enjoying the pleasures of alcoholic beverages, never wanting to let their hair down and party. I mean, just *think* about it. Do they *really* seem like fun guys to hang around? Would you really want a ninja as a best friend? How could you ever trust someone whose primary job and source of income is to sneak up on people, preferably when they're asleep, and slit their throats? Now pirates, on the other hand, are a fairly straightforward, joi de vivre lot. ![]() ![]() Loose flowing shirt with blousy sleeves, neck open halfway down the chest, tight pirate pants showing off hard muscular thighs ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Plus, they *love* to party and heartily enjoy the odd flagon of robust spirits; they spend most of their time in ships on the glorious ocean, with sails tautly filled, snapping and billowing with fresh sea breezes. They put ashore on the most gorgeous tropical islands replete with colorful parrots, swaying palms, exotic fruits, and partially-clad indigenous people. ![]() And their employment duties, which take up only a miniscule amount of their time, consist of relieving rich exploitive types of their ill-gotten gains. ![]() But, all in all, surely a pirate who looks you straight in the eye and says Yo-ho-ho is preferable to a hooded ninja who sneaks around and specializes in slitting throats. Betcha there aren't any Leo ninjas. That whole sneaking-around assassin thing is *so* not our style. ![]() ![]() |

I generally use James Bond as my yardstick for cool. He trained as a ninja and got tons of hot asian chicks to fall at his feet the whole time. There are also the turtle variety of ninjas, which I have a fondness for ...along with pizza.
While ninjas are known for being sneak-about bastards, it is important to understand that the first ninjas were villagers and farmers defending themselves and their families against well-armed samurai attackers. Many of the ninja's weapons resemble Japanese gardening tools for that very reason. They didn't have the numbers and weapons to take on the samurai hordes in a frontal attack, so they used stealth and guerilla tactics to fight. I think you're forgetting some of the "walk the plank" character traits of pirates in favor of some ersatz kidnapping fantasy, Carol. ![]() "What a computer is to me is it's the most remarkable tool that we've ever come up with, and it's the equivalent of a bicycle for our minds." - Steve Jobs |

![]() I prefer to furnish my fantasies with carefully selected details, thankyouverymuch, sunrain. ![]() Oh, and that whole walk-the-plank thing is reserved for the most appallingly cruel and greedy exploiters of the human condition... ...you know, kind of like current-day CEOs who accept multi-million dollar bonuses when their company is teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. ![]() Somehow, I didn't know that James Bond was trained as a ninja. In any case, it's kind of hard to picture him doing ninja stuff when he's so frequently dressed in a suit and tie. ![]() ![]() Honestly now, can you really compare a suit and tie to tight pants and knee-high leather boots? ![]() ![]() |

He wasn't wearing a suit, Carol. The disguise totally works though. Don't you think?

An uncountable number of ninjas die every time I fire up Kill Monty. They are really just generic cannon fodder.
Pirates on the other hand have enjoyed quite a PR boost thanks to mr. Depp. ![]() |

If there is a single ninja, that ninja will win. If there are many ninjas, all ninjas die. As far as pirates are concerned, you have badass pirates and bad asspirates. Take your pick.

All that black is just so dreary.
Pirates know how to dress with style and their whole their jobs is to sail about. Everything else is academic. duh ![]() |

On that note, I entirely disagree with this poll as we are comparing things that are not mutually exclusive. Ninjas can be pirates, but not all pirates are ninjas. Pirates can be ninjas, but not all ninjas are pirates.

Oh, and I have an intrinsic bias since I find the concept of a democratic republic of pirates to be life affirming, and the fact that it actually existed makes me very very happy.
