HELP!

My son just finished his movie in iMovie 6 HD. He needs a CD/DVD to take to school tomorrow to show it in class.

I tried exporting option to iDVD and then burning it to a DVD disk. That worked fine. But when I throw it into Vista the Windows Media Player says it "cannot play DVD because the compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

For kicks, I installed Quicktime Player on Vista machine but this did not seem to work.

What I am doing worng?

Windows doesn't come with DVD playback software, if I recall correctly. You have to get some OEM or third-party software like PowerDVD or WinDVD. QuickTime doesn't play DVDs.

You can try VLC, though. It's free.

I'm grasping at straws late tonight but what would you think the school would have to play his project?

Probably a regular DVD player, which should play it without any problems.

Edit: Windows STILL doesn't come with a DVD player?! Sheesh.

As far as I know, iDVD burns standard DVDs that should play anywhere. So as long as the Windows boxes at school have DVD playback capability, you should be OK. Do you have a consumer DVD player you can test the disk in?

I just played it on one my of Sony drives. It worked but. . ..

I just noticed some of his sound is messed up. I just am looking in iMovie HD 6 and see the "voice" tracks but they are now without sound. Damn.

I know it was working earlier--but the system froze and I had to hard reboot.

I am looking in there now and see "voice 16" or "voice 17" but they appear without sound.

Any one now how to retrive the sound tracks?

thanks for the help. It appears he has lost half his audio tracks and I do not see any way to recover them, so I guess he will have to re-record them tomorrow.

Turns out that when the export to IDVD from iMovie occurred and the system froze, he must have not saved his work. (I spend more time trying to recover my four kids' work since they are all so lazy saving their work along the way.)

Anyways, woke him up early, had him re-record the missing tracks and then exported it to iDVD and burned him a disc. He says the Windows machines at school have a stand-alone DVD player hooked to them, but we will see.

Again, thanks for the late night help as I was really scrambling.
