Is there anyway to prevent these sensitive files from being burned onto CDs or copied onto USB drives when copying files? The .DS_Store files I've opened in TextEdit show URLs I've visited and lists files within the directory from which I copied a certain file. I'm extremely concerned about this subject.

From what I can tell from the web, that's just something that OSX does. I'm surprised that they store that information though. As far as I can tell, they should just be storing information about icon size and arrangement.
I guess you could always go into Windows and delete them from your USB key, or burn the files onto a CD there. Other than that, I haven't got any ideas. You can also enable invisible files on your machine, then just delete them manually before burning the CD, or stop going to so many porn sites.

You can remove them at the command line, or there are utilities to scrub them from a folder, such as http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10478 . You'd have to do this before copying, and *not* open them in the Finder in between, however.
Some notes though: 1) This is Finder info that is stored as soon as you open the folder in the Finder. There's no way around this. (Unless you're viewing files on a remote server, in which case you *can* shut it off: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1629) 2) The info that is stored is things like window position, view options, etc. I can't imagine why you're seeing URLs. Care to copy and paste an example? 3) Unless you're opening this USB or CD on a non-Mac, you won't see the files anyway. 4) I don't think I've heard them described as sensitive before... ![]() Wait... are you by any chance running 10.4? In 10.4, some Spotlight info was stored in the .DS_Store file, but it was removed in 10.5. That could be the source of your 'sensitive' info. |

Swox, how would you expect Mac OS X to know when to show that little dialog "this was downloaded from internet... do you want to run it?" ? Seems reasonable place for it.
I also think there's supposed to be an option for "Windows-compatible" files which then automatically strips off the .DS_Store files. |

I don't know for sure but if that's where URL came from, then as I said, seems reasonable. Shocking as it may be, our technology is not sufficiently advanced to be sentient...
