I'm wondering what you all think of iPod engraving. I know some of you think it is stupid, but I'm a fan of the idea - it's a neat way of personalizing the iPod. Yeah, it usually decreases its resell value, but I'm the kind of person who probably wouldn't sell his iPods anyway (I'm glad I didn't get my iPod nano engraved, though...if the iPod video materializes, my sister will probably get it for her birthday!).

What would you get on your iPod, if you got it engraved?

I'm a big fan of putting song lyrics on the iPod - the two line limit seems to lend itself well to it (though the 27 or 23 character limit proves quite limiting). Unfortunately, the song lyrics I'd probably like most on an iPod...

the story's old, but it goes
on and on until we disappear

...have 28 characters per line. Needless to say, 27 is officially no longer my lucky number.

Most of the lyrics I'd like to put on the iPod barely fit, at least on the iPod nano. See if you can guess the artist and song, which shouldn't prove too hard for most of them, since you guys recommend most of these songs to me on AppleOutsider.

they will see us waving
from such great heights

so this is the new year
and i have no resolutions

even i, as sick as i am
i would never be you

(I know there's more I thought of that I'm forgetting.)

As I posted last week, 40 letters worth of laser engraving is now available on the iPod shuffle. I don't know what I'd want engraved on the iPod shuffle. Lyrics don't really fit...

Warning: Do not eat iPod shuffle

...sounds good. Song titles could fit, too...unfortunately, the title I'd want to get engraved on the iPod shuffle (and, quite possibly, the title of my student film)...

(the quiet things that no one ever knows)

...comes to 41 characters. I know I could remove the paranthensees, but for some reason it just wouldn't feel right (even though the original song title didn't have them).

I hope the iPod video is held horizontally, thus giving it more room for laser engraving. Having movie lines on the back of an iPod video would be so cool!

What would/did you get, if you had your iPod engraved?

I bought a blue mini for my SO's birthday. I had it engraved:

you are my muse+music
i'd be blue without you

Yeah, yeah, shut the hell up. It's shit like that that keeps me getting laid.

She's getting me an iPod in the coming weeks and won't tell me what she's having engraved on it. I hope it's not some sappy shit like I came up with.

So it goes.

To be honest, the iPod engraving I probably want most is (geek alert!) the Hogwarts crest on the Harry Potter Collector's Edition iPod. But I really doubt I'll pay $249 for the audiobooks I've already read plus $299 for an iPod that will be outdated soon anyway. So maybe I'm not such a geek after all. (Phew!)

Still, it's dangerous for my wallet when my favorite book series and my favorite electronics products collide. That was a close one.

we have cluster flies alas

'twas my signature here for quote some time.

Nice. I haven't heard "Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll" (as I'm assuming that's from) or the other Hot Fuss "Special Edition" tracks yet. I'm a sucker for special editions, though, so I might pick it up with my new paycheck. Hmm.

Of all the Phish lyrics that you could have picked from...

Kidding! It's a good song, but there are many others that are better.

Although, when I listen to Phish, it's not really for their amazing lyrics.

Come waste your time with me

Now I'm trying to decide what lines I'd put on the back of an iPod video.

My favorite film is Donnie Darko, so...

I'm voting for Dukakis. (The famous and rather symbolic opening line)

Wake up, Donnie. (If you've seen the movie, as I hope you have, there's no need to explain.)

Why are you wearing that stupid man suit? (Probably the most famous line from the film...)

I'd love to put Donnie's letter (spoiler warning, go so the movie now if you haven't):

Dear Roberta Sparrow, I have reached the end of your book and... there are so many things that I need to ask you. Sometimes I'm afraid of what you might tell me. Sometimes I'm afraid that you'll tell me that this is not a work of fiction. I can only hope that the answers will come to me in my sleep. I hope that when the world comes to an end, I can breathe a sigh of relief, because there will be so much to look forward to.

...but somehow I doubt the iPod video will have that much engraving space.

What other movie lines should I consider?

I know, it's weird, talking about what I should have engraved on a purely theoretical product...but that's me.

Maybe I'll make a "Favorite Movie Quotes" thread in AppleOutsider.

I'm definently doing lyrics on mine. I'll probably do some Bob Dylan or Beatles.
