I have the new Apple 20" Cinema Display. I love it. Just what I wanted.
I do have a couple questions about it that I've never seen addressed.

#1 How long is considered a good useable life-span? (how many years does this type of display usually last?)

#2 What usually goes wrong with this type of display?

#3 Are things fixable on it and worth the cost of having Apple fix them?

I know that it's guess work on these questions, but barring unforeseens,
I'm just interested in what I can maybe expect. What's standard?

Thanks.

1. Really depends on the usage of the user. I think warranties on third parties for quality LCDs is 3 years, though they last much longer. The main issue is backlight life - can't find the average, but I think 20,000+ hrs.

2. Dead or stuck pixels.

3. Dead = Not fixable. Stuck may be massaged out sometimes. Apple's policy is case by case, though I've heard 8+ pixels with a defect may warrant a replacement.

Yep. You need a garden of dead or stuck pixels before they'll do anything to it. Pretty weak, really considering other manufacturers will do something after only two or three.

...into the light of a dark black night.

Agree. Which is one of the main reasons why the new nano tube technology is superior to current (single backlight - if it goes bad replace one component not - up to - 16 even though only one has failed).

So, mine is the single backlight?
Any idea (rough) what that is, installed at Apple?
