Sexy. (read from TOP to BOTTOM)
EDIT by FFL - now with proper chronology!

giving preview of Leopard today
10:29 am we're working on Leopard
10:29 am what we can't show:
10:29 am top secret features not being shown, just not letting you know what they are.
10:30 am don't want photocopiers started too early
10:30 am major things in leopard demo:
10:30 am 1) support for 64 bit applications
10:30 am previously at unix layer
10:31 am in leopard - giant leap forward - extend support all the way through UI framework into applications
10:31 am have a fully native 64 bit UI carbon app
10:31 am did in a completely 32 bit compatible way
full support, top to bottom
10:31 am can run 32 bit apps side by side with 64 bit - no emulation, no translation
10:32 am 2) Time machine
10:32 am how to combat loss of information on hard drives - backups
10:32 am we all know we should, but lots of people don't
10:33 am only 26% of users back up in any way whatsoever
not really secure
10:33 am dig a little deeper - most that say they are are manually dragging files & folders into another drive
only 4%
10:33 am how many use automated software to stay always backed up?
Time Machine
10:34 am plan to change all of that
then you can restore everything
photos, music, documents, files folder, everything
you change a file, it automatically backs up
10:34 am automatically backs up mac
10:34 am can be right where you were when the HD drive
10:35 am can restore everything, or just one file at a time
10:35 am backup to HD, or server
10:35 am coolest part - and reason we call it that - whole new way of backing up files
10:35 am ever had time where you work on a doc and you do a save as and overwrote the wrong one?
important stuff
10:36 am finder windows
10:37 am with time machine, you can get those files back by entering a date or time
10:37 am instantly back
10:37 am finder windows move through timeline on the side of the machine through time - very cool to watch
10:37 am visual representation of moving through time
10:38 am timeline on right-hand side
10:38 am can go back a day - or two days
10:38 am finder windows "warping" forward
10:38 am devs are impressed
10:39 am file previews without going through full restore
10:39 am desktop "warps" back to place in time
10:39 am it is that easy to go back in time and restore what you want to restore
10:39 am great for finder - but can work with 3rd party apps as well
10:40 am can search for documents in the past
10:40 am series of windows receeding into the distance
10:40 am works in iPhoto
10:40 am can find entire roll of deleted photos back in time
10:41 am moved to backup system
10:41 am iphoto demo of rolling to the past
10:41 am jumped right to photos
10:42 am absolutely the best way to back up everything you have, store everything, and find what you need that you thought you didn't
some really cool beta software now
10:42 am 3) deliver complete package
boot camp will be included
10:42 am shipping all as part of leopard
10:43 am reaction to boot camp has been good
will ship as part of leopard
10:43 am 1/2 million downloads
10:43 am front row - access to all of your media from across the room sitting on your couch
10:43 am next gen front row & photo booth built into leopard
10:44 am 4) Virtual Desktops
10:44 am "space"
10:45 am create different spaces for different clusters of apps to work together
10:45 am Mail & Safari
10:45 am CORRECTION FROM PREVIOUS FOR MAC PRO: dual 2.66 Xeon, 1 GB RAM, Geforce 7300 GT (256 MB VRAM), SuperDrive, $2499
10:45 am TIME MACHINE LOGO: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.en...8/dsc_0489.jpg
10:46 am Steve showing how to use multiple desktops for different jobs - working on web pages, etc.
10:46 am "very cool"
10:46 am can drag info from one desktop to the other
10:47 am spaces lets me create collections of apps for different tasks that's intuitive
10:47 am built in to leopard
10:47 am 5) spotlight
making it even better in leopard
10:47 am one of the great features of tiger - instantly search for any file by all sorts of things
10:48 am enabling spotlight to search OTHER machines if you have permissions
and search workgroup servers at the office
10:48 am if at home with several macs, you can search them all
10:48 am advanced search - lots of feedback from devs
10:49 am specify file type and other dev requests will be added in leopard
10:49 am making it a great app launcher
10:49 am adding recent items to spotlight
10:49 am prepopulated with recent stuff you've been doing
10:49 am what you're looking for is often right there without doing a search
10:49 am 6) more animations

sorry
10:50 am "CORE animation"
10:50 am allows you to dramatically increase the production value of your applications
10:50 am time machine built on core animation
10:50 am thousands of layers - text, images, video, openGL, almost anything
10:50 am start space, goal space, & keyframes
10:51 am core animation handles everything in between - color, size, opacity, all kinds of things
icon for it is same as other core items, but purple
10:51 am demo
albums of photos, videos - just scratching the surface
10:52 am very easy to work in - move items around on their own layers
10:52 am demo is a screen saver
10:52 am all you have to do is specify a start and an end, and it figures everything out automatically
10:52 am zoom, fly camera around where you want
10:53 am written in half the lines of a typical screen saver to produce better results
10:53 am lots of power to easily add rich interactivity to your apps
10:53 am OS X is great - we want everyone to have a chance to use it
10:53 am focusing on access for leopard
10:54 am rails supports - closed captions for quicktime
10:54 am better ways to navigate the system
text to speech
10:54 am best way to show this: "voiceover" - demo
10:54 am using Apple boilerplate info from bottom of press releases
10:55 am new voiceover is incredible - sounds like a real person reading.
10:55 am SPACES LOGO: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.en...8/dsc_0521.jpg
10:56 am TIME MACHINE screen shot: http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.en...8/dsc_0502.jpg
10:56 am voiceover voices are very natural
10:56 am crowd is very impressed
10:57 am one of the things users like to do is speed things up - voiceover speeds up flawlessly
10:57 am still clean, understandable.
10:57 am next up: the big one
10:58 am major enhancements - mail
to-do's added
notes added
stationary added
10:58 am really great things - new creative things
photos, email - would be great to apply stationary and have it look incredible in mail - industry standard html email
10:58 am stationary:
10:59 am can send like that to anyone and will look like this on the other end
including lots of templates
10:59 am "boom" and send it out
used to send email to myself to make notes of things to take care of - must be a better way to do this
10:59 am Notes:
11:00 am adding it to leopard - new special mailbox called "notes" to keep them separate
select something - can make it a "to do" item
11:00 am To Do list - want something more powerful than just notes to keep track of things
11:00 am priority, alarms, etc.

11:06 am only 3 of the really cool features added to mail
11:06 am 9) dashboard
not only because of starter widgets, but because of all the fantastic 3rd party widgets - over 2500 available today
11:06 am one of our favorite features of tiger
templates
helps to design, develop and debug dashboard widgets

"Spaces" is the best idea I have heard of in a long time..

I often make partitions to keep my Dev work away from my Web work, and then another for Games and messing around, then yet another for Video..

Being able to split my machine up a la "Spaces" is da bomb!

I have no use for virtual desktops, but at least Spotlight will be better.

I used virtual desktops while I ran linux and I really liked it. Although F9 has greatly reduced the need for it, it would be nice to stick mail/netnewswire on one desktop, safari/adium on another and a blank one for warcrafting/photoshopping/pages/etc.

E: 'Advanced boolean search' from AI.com! yay! one thing in spotlight I really wanted.

Why are they still wasting time on Mail?
Google has mail pretty much covered now. Why fill up your HD with mail - when you can just leave it on Google's Servers.

Because I'd rather have my email with me wherever I go and not have to log onto the internet. I have plenty of room on my HD anyway.

The engadget page was spammed with anti-apple comments.

Well, I look forward to buying a new tower next summer, since I'm going to wait.

As for the Leopard preview, well, I think you know how I feel.

(Oh, and they corrected the lower end Mac Pro specs, see Mac Pro thread)

New iChat toys, Time Machine outdoing every backup utility I've heard of so far, ability for even ME to develop Widgets (hell yeah), drag & drop between desktops, some neat-sounding UI development stuff that I barely understand...

Whatever, you sourpusses. I like what I've read; I'll be watching the keynote after it gets posted.

iChat looks awesome. It might even make me switch over from Adium.

The screen sharing feature is amazing. It's like remote desktop, but witin iChat.

I can't wait to get this next version of OS X

Edit: WindowsRookie: anyway you could set that as a link instead of having to scroll all the way through that?

I did notice iChat didn't have brushed metal, but Safar still seems to.

Maybe the top secret is a new UI?

Or more features? Or both?

And didn't Jobs say more announcements all through the week?

That looks sweet. Even more useful than FaceTop, which although cool to watch, also cluttered the screen with the users' faces (sorry, whoever's working on it).

Look closely at the buddy list in Apple's website, too -- there's a username with a little Airport-like symbol next to it. Would that be a local, direct computer-to-computer chat?

I don't think I'm the only one dissapointed....

Sure the MacPros are great, but 10.5 doesn't really look much better than 10.4.

That's because a lot of it is "Top Secret," don'cha know.

Seriously, though. Apple's not going to reveal any mind-blowing features nearly a year in advance. We'll see more of it at MWSF. I'm crossing my fingers for resolution independence, and a new Finder, just so everyone will shut up about it.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

10.5 looks amazing in my opinion. I can't wait until you can pre-order it because I'm going to as soon as you can. I want 10.5 in my hands the day it's available.
