I'm shooting B&W and developing it myself now - time for a bump.

I haven't experimented with b/w for many years, but just recently I discoverd some pictures seem to work pretty well in b/w.

Shot on a small train station in Leiden, around midnight. ISO 800, 50mm F1.8, 1/40sec. no flash.

Somewhere near Leiden. ISO 100, 70mm F4.5, 1/160sec.

Taken yesterday at a classic car show.
Interesting shot. You definitely have an excellent eye.

Now, which do you guys prefer? That one, or this one with the contrast bumped up?

The first is white, puffy, and soothing. Makes me think: "Ahhhh...".

The second is amazingly dramatic, intense, thrilling, and makes me think: "Whoa! Holy Moly! Oh.My.Gosh."

So, I like both very much. Why must one choose? They are completely different statements, don't you think?

I *love* the shot of the girl. Wonderful close-up.

And the bovine, poor thing, desperately needs some attention to the fur coat... though I guess that winter coat will just shed completely off when spring arrives, yes?

Haha, thanks for the compliment

The girl shot is nice indeed. Very lucky, I just had 30 sec. before the train arrived and she had to leave. I had tried to take pictures of her earlier that evening, she didn't like it. But suddenly she was open to me taking her picture, so I took my chance. The cool thing to me is that this is the first time she looks like a young adult woman, not just like a "girl". It's great to have captured that moment.

As for the bovine: it's sort of a wild cow from Scotland. We call them "Scottish Highlander" and in the Netherlands they are deployed in natural reserves to keep the landscape "open". And, no, they don't drop their fur in the summer, poor species.

Saw the color thread was resurrected, so I decided to resurrect the B&W thread and post some pics of NYC from a few years back (all shot with a Nikon F4):

Hi julesstoop, I love your pics. But what's the faint black halo around the girl's right shoulder (left shoulder in the photo)?

And can one still smoke in clubs in the Netherlands?

The station photo is great. Contrast between the roundness of the guy's head and the straight lines of the steel structures, receding perspective lines, specular highlights, all swimming in lovely bokeh. Nice!

Thanks for the compliment!

Anyhow, I obviously posted the wrong version, thanks for pointing it out. I'll repair the damage

We have to stop smoking in clubs/bars/restaurants, etc.. on the first of july, just a few days left...

Alright, I've decided to start shooting film this summer. I won't be able to develop it until August (when I get back to school) but whatever.

I have a roll of Tri-X 400; is this stuff any good? Does it push well to 800?

Also, here's a few I meant to post but never did. These were all taken while I was still at school (and still had a darkroom):

Bump.

Yesterday I went to a user meeting of a german Nikon forum. We met at the Bebenhausen monastery. As the light was harsh and the colors were bad anyway, I tried to make some b/w shots. Here's one I like:

I was going through some of my older pictures from my first photography class and found this one and remembered how much I liked it.

I've finally started scanning some of my B&W negs, but I'm finding they're all dirty and I end up with annoying artifacts:

This is without any adjustment after the scan. Obviously the contrast and brightness need some work.

So how can I clean these negatives so they scan well? Anyone else deal with this issue?

Here are the rest. I haven't scanned all of them and didn't even bother to rotate the scans correctly yet. (Six page paper on ancient Athenian justice due Tuesday...)

This one came out well though, I just need to bring down the brightness a bit:

Some little HDR-ish experiment, on request by the way:

Thanks Steve, but you didn't miss it in the end

Cool picture, by the way, sort of the same distracted glance. Is it in Rome? Because it sort of reminds me a lot of Berlin.

I particularly like how her face is lit. All natural I assume?

One point of critique. I think the picture would have been even stronger if the portal on the background were more to the right of the picture. But I know that we often don't get to choose

Haha, you're probably right. I didn't know this woman and she didn't know I was taking the picture, so I tried to be as discreet as possible.

It is in fact in Rome. If you look closely at the leaves, they are white. This is because it is infrared. The lighting is all natural.

It was actually the sycamore (or do you call it a plane tree) which reminded me of Berlin. I wonder, how does it work, infrared photography. Do you need a special camera?

Oh no, you don't need a special camera. You just need to get an infrared filter and put it in front of your lens. Of course you won't be able to see through your viewfinder, so I suggest setting it on a tripod. The exposures will be pretty long because there's a piece of glass in front of the sensor that actually filters out infrared (so only very little can come in). I modified my camera to get around this, and to make my camera more sensitive to IR. You should give it a shot, it's makes boring pics look awesome.

Steve,

Just to ensure that i got this right, you can simply buy a filter to put over the lens of your DSLR?? Or are you using a special IR film in a traditional camera??

The IR photos on your site are pretty awesome.

Oh, I'm using a nikon D70. That's correct, just buy the filter, hold it in front of your lens and expose accordingly. If you aren't shooting RAW, you want to set your white balance manually by shooting a patch of green grass with the filter in front of the lens.

That filter I recommend because it's super cheap and easy to use (just hold it in front of your lens) and works great!

Thanks for looking at the pics!
