Apologies if this is mentioned elsewhere; I haven't seen another thread on the subject, but figured the musos here would care...
John Peel, legendary UK DJ died yesterday on holiday in Peru aged 65. Most people with an interest in alternative music, particularly punk, but crossing over most modern genres, from bhangra to drum and bass to emo, will know that Peel was one of the biggest champions of new and unusual music. It's a very sad loss to the music world. More info... http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/news/alt...tributes.shtml Simon |

It wasn't mentioned elsewhere, and I'm shocked it took this long for a thread about it to start. The Peel Sessions on the BBC had some of my favourite recordings and introduced me to so many new artists, most recently Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia. It's really too bad
It is with great regret that we say our farewells to Jack, who passed away on May 28th, 2005. NPR had a nice story with audio clips of Peel, friends, and some bands he helped make.
Listen here Edit: BBC has announced Elijah Wood will fill in for Peel later this year. Quote:

NPR carried an interview (about John Peel) yesterday, with someone from BBC Radio 4.
It was a fascinating interview. It sounded like he was a wonderful guy, and a single-handed force for decades in the love and promotion of new music. What was the cause of his death, I'm wondering? |

Just to add my tribute:
The guy was amazing - not only the longest serving Radio 1 DJ, but possibly the only DJ in the world to maintain contemporary musical taste over a period of 40+ years! Many bands and many people have a lot to thank him for... |
