I ran across a piece of transparent lettuce in my salad yesterday and it freaked me out so I stopped eating.
  • Would YOU have eaten this piece of lettuce?
  • Do YOU think it was probably unsafe to eat or do you think I overreacted? (entirely possible)

It isn't likely that it would make you sick, but better safe than sorry.

I once ate a slice of lettuce not dissimilar to that one. I couldn't see myself in the mirror for 48 hours. Is the risk worth it?

I'd be more worried that I might've eaten the piece of lettuce that sucked the color and life out of that one. THAT is where the evil lies.

So it goes.

Ribbit.

I have eaten leaves of lettuce like that. Harmless. It's the brown, slimy lettuce one should avoid.

Frogs too.

No I wouldn't have eaten it, but I doubt you would've gotten sick. Not unless you ate a few heaping fork-fulls at one time. It's all a numbers game with those bacteria. A certain amount your system can handle. Over that amount, not so much.

That spider salad recipe made me faint like a girlie bitch, btw.

If you just sit and stare at it long enough, you'll start desensitize yourself to it, and the fear will go away.

I'm scared of sharks (reasonable, I think), but that problem is easily solved by not going in salt water.

Didn't we have a de facto rule against non-spoiler-tagged spider pics?

Not that I don't love the rage that comes with it.

EDIT: Ah, yes...

Hey but seriously, I just looked at the photo again and my colon convulsed spasmodically and I had a minor tremble of a dry heave. I'm pretty sure that piece of lettuce would have led me to wax eloquent in my Poo Log.

Sorry if that text is a bit green and transparent, that's how my tummy would have been feeling if I'd et that thing.

We got a live frog once in a bag of Boch Choi leaves. (sp?)

Anyway, it happens. He was quite healthy too.

From the source...

Quote:
What probably happened, according to Field Day reader Jenni Blake who sent it in, is that the water the lettuce was washed in water containing tadpoles and these became new frogs in the packing.

So if you're looking for salad with a little more body, then be sure to try this brand.

I was doing a search for something and noticed this thread. Made me think of the egg/salmonella scare going on, and I wondered if anyone here had gotten sick from eggs lately.

Also, wrt that piece of lettuce, if lettuce gets too close to a freezer compartment, the nearest leaves will freeze and will turn transparent when thawed out. Nothing to worry about. Brown leaves with slime - good to avoid for general ickiness, but not illness-causing either.

The poor little frog - trapped in a sealed plastic bag. Awww. Poor little thing. Hope he was turned loose in a safe and appropriate place.

It actually seems as though my daughter has developed the symptoms of salmonella this morning. She's normally the cook for my breakfast which almost always includes eggs. I'm fine still.

I haven't gotten sick, nor do I know anyone who has. I always buy cage free, most of the time organic, and locally as often as possible. The factory farms are enough to make me sick.

Come waste your time with me

I am not in favor of translucent lettuce, cabbage leaves or anything else that should be opaque, cold and crisp. If it's a vegetable and also flimsy, slimy, translucent... don't eat it.

Has your daughter recovered by now, I hope?

Oh, I agree completely. I wouldn't eat that translucent leaf either. I'll only eat salad greens when they're pristine and crispy.

But he did ask about the 'safety' of the translucent leaf. It's safe to eat, but I'd throw such leaves away and confine my attentions to the crispy ones. I guess I was also answering his question with reference to whether he should throw the whole bag of lettuce away because of a few impaired leaves. Just throw out the translucent/limp/and certainly slimy leaves. The rest (the crispy ones) should be okay.

Not yet actually. She's still run down pretty hard and feeling generally crappy. Seems it's a 4-7 day recovery time and her body seems to be dragging it out.
