So the big question is, will it be worth switching from 10.14 to 10.16? Maybe they'll make it worth while this time...

They should spend the next year fixing bugs and letting devs get ready for ARM. Defer .16 for another year.

Wonder when they will switch to 11.0? Seems like a switch to ARM would be a good point. It would still likely be *nix based so I wouldn't this it has to change, it would be more for marketing than anything else.

If they were going to do that, it would have been 11 for the switch to Intel. I doubt we'll be seeing OS 11 without some major UI and under the hood changes, like new programing languages etc. Maybe OS 11 would be a completely AR based system, with no screens?

I was disappointed they didn't do it when they shipped 10.10 Yosemite. It would've avoided the awkwardness of two-digit numbers, and Yosemite came with a significant facelift.
Or do it with 10.11 El Capitan: just make 10.11 11.0 instead. But, nope… It's weird that macOS has been stuck in this "no minor releases" situation for two decades now, especially when iOS hasn't. |

You all did notice the version number for Big Sur is 11 right?

Yup. My speculation (9 hours before the keynote, in case that isn’t clear) was wrong.

Not until someone said something and I looked closer. Honestly pretty hyped about it... They haven't bumped the major version in 20 years, and that's across an arch change, too (PPC to x86), so I'm really curious as to what drove that particular decision.
When I was a kid, people who did wrong were punished, restricted, and forbidden. Now, when someone does wrong, all of the rest of us are punished, restricted, and forbidden... and the one who did the wrong is counselled and "understood" and fed ice cream. |

To put that another way, there were 17 years of Mac OS Classic (1984 through 2001), but 19 years of Mac OS X / OS X / macOS 10. Hard to wrap my mind around.
