Hey I've got my iMac torn down and ready to upgrade it with the OWC bracket and therm cable peice.

But buddy got the Title iMac and ordered just the 1TB SSD over the 3TB fusion.. How is an SSD getting those speeds? Also, will it work in my machine?

The SSD in those is actually a PCIe module rather than a SATA-connected 2.5" SSD. The PCIe doohickies area lot faster! Not sure if they are NVMe, but I think they are. Basically, the same tech Apple is using in the MacBook Pro, which get speeds from 1.5 GB/sec to 3 GB/sec.

Here's the deal - I've got a Late 2015 iMac 4.0, 4gb video card, 64 gb RAM, and the 3TB fusion, My read speeds are great 1800+ MB but my read speeds are 250mb average. Any thoughts to putting a SSD into my machine will give me better FCP X, Capture One, Lightroom and work horse power?

IF so, please help me with a drive choice. The last I remember is the Samsung 860 Pros coming out 6+ years ago, so dont know who's out there that that fits affordabe + speed.

thanks

For SATA there are four good choices: Best is the Samsung 860 Pro, which was just released last year, not 6 years ago, you might be thinking of the 840 Pro. The 860 Pro maxes out the SATA port 560MB/s read and 530MB/s write. That might not sound great, but unlike cheaper consumer drives it does not bog down when working with high bit-rate 1080p video playback in editors. If you are working with 4k+ files, you're just not going to get great performance. I have the previous 850 Pro from Samsung that came out in 2016, and it is the only SATA SSD to date that I have that didn't bog down in video editors, so I'm sure the 860 Pro is as good or better. If you work with video, go for the Pro.

For anything else the Crucial MX500 and West Digital Blue or Samsung 860 EVO will be more than enough. If it were me I'd get the doubler kit, put a 500-512GB Pro in as a scratch drive and a larger 1+TB EVO/MX500 or WD Blue in for other storage like the boot drive, pictures, etc.

Since I haev a 128gb Blade SSD, couldnt I just use that and Get like 1800Write and Read Speeds? If I just use my RAID 5 as a backup and cut a project and offload to the RAID at that point?

Can you clarify, I'm not familiar with a 128GB Blade SSD, is that an external PCI-E thunderbolt device? With those read/write speed I assume it must be, since no SATA device has that performance, as I noted the Samsung 860 Pro is maxing out the SATA3 channels at 560mbs/r and 530mbs/r. If you are doing the editing via files on an external SSD RAID array, then I doubt you'd notice any speed change at all by switching the internal drive to a SATA SSD vs the fusion drive other than faster boot times.
