I received my MacBook Pro today and it was very quiet at first but then after using it for a couple of hours the fan under the left speaker went on and now it doesn't go off. It's pretty loud so it's really annoying. Is there any way to turn it off?

You're going to learn to love that fan. The back left area of the computer gets REALLY hot. If that fan turned off, you may burn a hole through your table :P

CONGRATS on receiving the MacBook Pro! Mine came on Friday

Cool the computer down?

Seriously, though: Download Temperature Monitor and tell us what it says.

Edit: Actually, come to think of it, I'm not sure if Temperature Monitor works on a MacBook Pro. There's a thread about that somewhere on here - time to hit the search function.

Also check to see if it's because of Spotlight indexing the HD. What processes are running and what percentage of the CPU are they using?

CPU is ~95 % idle. And it isn't even hot only sligthly warm.

Another thing is that the processor starts whining when I pull out the MagSafe connector.

I've now had the book unplugged and shut down for 5 hours so it was completely cold but the fan went on as soon as I pushed the power button.

Yikes. Take it to a store (if you can) and pray they replace it.

No stores around here.

I just did a hardware test (twice to make sure) and it reported an error: 4SNS/1/40000000: `TmOPĀ“

Any idea what it could mean?

I found no defnitive solution, but in about the space of 3 minutes I found numerous discussions on Apple's Support Boards.

People getting the same message tend to have the constant fan noise, as well as screen whine. The most frequently recommended "fix" I saw was to take it to an Apple Store or exchange it by mail.

I just compared the fan noise to an iMac 1.83 Core Duo and a Mini 1.67 Core Duo and my MBP 2.0 was quieter than them so I guess it's okay.

Don't know if the hardware test error is anything to worry about since everybody seems to be getting it. It was the extended test that reported the error. The basic test reports nothing.

I did the extended test on my 1.83 MBP and didn't get an error...also my fan is rarely on, only when doing heavy stuff like video encoding (or attempting to do anything in FCP under Rosetta) or when I have it sitting on sheets/the bed (which Apple specifically says not to do...this often blocks the vents).
Personally I would try to get another machine ASAP because if its fan is always on that's going to suck your battery down quite a bit, in addition to just being annoying. When my fan is on I can *hear* it...it's certainly not quiet. Plus who knows what else could be wrong with it.

I think it's a non-issue now. I don't think the sound is a fan anymore. I've heard a fan come on and it sounds different. I think it's just the hard-drive spinning because the sound comes from right above the hard-drive. What do you hear if you put your ear just above the hard-drive?

Btw, I read on the Apple forums that when a guy went to get the error fixed they just resetted the NVRAM and then the error was gone.

Edit: I heard the fans come on so it is definitely the hard-drive that is making the noise. I'm just not used to a loud hard-drive like this because the replacement drive in my old PowerBook G3 was super quiet.

How do you run a hardware test, or extended test?

I have now verified that it's the harddrive. The sound is gone when the harddrive goes to sleep. It was never a fan it was just that I couldn't hear it at first because I wasn't in a quiet room. It's apparently a Seagate drive so now I understand why it's not quiet. Should've probably gone with the 7200rpm instead.
