Honestly... for under a grand you can get yourself a pretty sweet audio setup at home.

And you can control the volume.

I just put in a 3.1 system using Ascend speakers and an SVS sub, plus Denon receiver. So far I'm pretty happy with it—mostly upgraded for music rather than movies, but at some point I'll probably expand it to 5.1.

With the price of decent short throw projectors, sound systems and such you can easily enjoy a movie in your own home now. Way more than ever for that matter. You don't need a true "home theater" to be able to watch a flick with comfort. I mean, TVs are so big and cheap even if they aren't amazing quality at the Walmart pricing. Still better looking than a big screen for most people.

I have a decent audio system, a Yamaha receiver, Cambridge Audio speakers, Center channel and a ELAC sub, but I wouldn’t put it on par with what the theatre has to offer. I think I’d want a more powerful amp before I add satellite speakers for 5.1. I don’t care that much, it’s been years since I’ve felt the need to go, and wouldn’t care to now at all.

heh. Like the time I was in Bahrain and one of the guys coming in off liberty told the gate guard to watch out for the explosives in his backpack.

It didn't go well for him.

Most agencies/institutions aren't all that up for bomb/explosion jokes, as it turns out. And I'd say now more than ever.

I remember in high school, a student phoned in a bomb threat to the school during lunch...from a pay phone in the snack/gathering area outside the cafeteria. Meaning about three dozen, at least, people saw/heard him do it and ratted his dumb ass out immediately.

"Uh, there's your guy right there...".

He was too stupid to even go about that halfway right.

But they still had to evacuate the joint, and so we stood outside for most of the rest of the afternoon as fire trucks, cops, etc. all showed up and did their thing.

Yeah, he was expelled.

That it was who it was surprised no one...he was pretty much King Dipshit already, and not exactly known for possessing a brain. One of those "about time..." situations.

I can only assume he's locked up in some medium-security penitentiary somewhere in the Southeastern United States, for any number of things he probably did after his teen years. I'd be shocked beyond words if not.

If you can't trust a judge...

Quote:
A Maryland judge accused of using a hidden video camera to record children in a bathroom at his fishing cabin died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot Friday as federal agents were moving in to arrest him, authorities said.
Damn, what a sordid tale. But I won't lie...I kinda like that he opted to spare everyone the usual teary-eyed, quiver-lipped press conference, with all the hollow apologies and "I've let my family down, and I'm currently seeking therapy and counseling" boilerplate.

Quote:
Jonathan Gray Newell, 50, served as a circuit court judge in Caroline County on the state’s Eastern Shore. Criminal records unsealed this week revealed that when Newell was first questioned by investigators at his cabin in July, he was allowed to go to his bedroom to ostensibly charge his mobile phone but instead is alleged to have ingested an SD memory card he had furtively removed from the camera.

“The investigator heard a loud, distinguishable, ‘crunch,’ sound from the area of Newell’s mouth,” an FBI agent wrote in a criminal complaint. “After another minute or two, the investigator heard the same ‘crunch’ again from Newell’s mouth, followed by Newell immediately reaching for and drinking from a cup located on his dresser.”
The guy ate the camera's memory card, with law enforcement in the room (or very near by).

I'm no legal expert/analyst, but my guess is - stay with me here - that he was maybe trying to hide something?

Just a theory...

Quote:
Born in Chestertown, Md., Newell earned a philosophy degree from Washington College and a law degree from the Washington & Lee University School of Law, according to state records. He served as public defender in Caroline County, a prosecutor in Kent County and then, in 2003, became the top prosecutor in Caroline County.

He served that post for about 14 years.

“Newell focused on felony drug, sex offense and child abuse cases, plus a dozen murder cases,” wrote the Times Record of Denton, Md.

He became a judge in 2016.
This is why I put no occupation/career, social standing, political affiliation, education levels/degrees, professed religious beliefs, etc. above others, or anything else. "Oh, he/she wouldn't do that...they're a known, well-respected [fill in the blank] with 20 years of [fill in the blank] at the highest [fill in the blank], working closely with the [fill in the blank]!"

Oh, okay. That he was a self-taught pedo-artisan and a grandmaster in the diddler arts the entire time can't also be true?

Quote:
Investigators searched the cabin, Newell’s home in Henderson, his truck, boat and office, seizing “numerous digital devices” — including a Toshiba external hard drive inside a safe in a den in the Henderson home, according to court records.

That device “revealed numerous videos of minor males showering,” the FBI wrote.

Investigators spoke with nine teenagers who had been to Newell’s cabin, home or both. Some had known Newell since elementary school. The boys said they showered in Newell’s bathrooms and that he regularly came in to check their bodies for ticks.
Yeah, I bet he did.

"Here, Brandon...drink this. Ticks absolutely hate the taste/smell of red wine!"

He knew he was toast. And that if convicted/sent to prison, due to both his crime and his (former) occupation, he might have a rougher-than-average go of things.

Yeah, when you start eating digital storage devices to hide/destroy evidence, you're pretty much holding up a 6-foot flashing neon sign saying "I'm guilty as shit". Idiot.

From the same article above:

Quote:
Newell also spent time at a cabin in Fishing Creek, Md., and sometimes hosted juvenile guests overnight, according to court records.
Family friends? Neighbor's kids? Some sort of scout/church group?

The story doesn't make clear, but what, exactly, were all these teen boys doing at his fishing cabin in such numbers? What was the situation there? And were their parents Michael Jackson fans?

Quote:
The morning of July 23, a teenage boy — approximately 15 — entered a bathroom adjacent to Newell’s bedroom to shower. He noticed what appeared to be a little camera, with a green blinking light, on a corner shelf tucked inside a small black utility crate, records state. The boy took pictures of it with his cellphone, according to the records.

He went to find another teen to tell him about the camera. That’s when he saw Newell go into the bathroom and retreat to his bedroom with several items in his hand, according to the FBI criminal complaint.

The boys went into the bathroom and the camera was gone.

A brief time later, each teen called his parents, telling them about the camera.

“Their parents then contacted law enforcement,” the FBI wrote.

Investigators arrived the same day.

"Each teen called his parents", meaning there was more than one kid there. At least two, the story kinda makes it sound like. Then the parents called the cops. What made these parents cool with sending their kids off to a fishing cabin with a grown man who, I assume, wasn't a close relative or some sort of scout/church youth leader?

Who are there parents? Where were they? Friends of the judge? No initial inkling/suspicion? The whole "he's a sitting judge, ffs, what could possibly happen?" thing at play?

Well, apparently His Honor was tugging it in his master suite to pics/video of your son lathering up with the Irish Spring. That's what could possibly happen.

Good grief...

Two stories, two days in a row, involving a camera memory card. But this one is far worse than the pedo-judge above eating his.

We're in the end times, I do believe.

Quote:
A Chicago mom was charged Sunday in the murder of her 12-year-old son after allegedly shooting the boy over a missing SD memory card, a report said.
Not sure on which planet this is a reasonable response, but pretty sure it isn't this one.

Quote:
Fallon Harris, the 37-year-old mother, confronted her son about the card, prosecutors said, citing video from inside the Chicago home. The boy said he didn't know where the card was, so she allegedly shot him. The report said he was "conscious and crying."
"Video from inside the home", as in in-home Ring/ADT/SimpliSafe home security or nanny cams? Or was the bitch (or someone else) filming it all with their phone? You do realize that, in 2021, I have to ask/wonder (and then leave room for the latter).

Quote:
The city laborer asked for the card a second time and, once again, the boy said that he did not know, so she fired again, the report, citing prosecutors, said. This shot proved to be fatal, and the boy could be seen collapsing on the kitchen floor, the report said. He was pronounced dead at the University of Chicago Medical Center at 10:15 a.m.
She shot him twice. That's not a one-off, hyper-emotional "I lost control and snapped".

That's "I aimed a loaded gun at my own son, shot him once over something completely stupid and undeserving. And when I didn't get the answers I wanted, I aimed and pulled the trigger again, killing him".

There's a special place reserved for people like this.

I want to be able to say "okay, this is worst, saddest story of 2021. It won't get any more awful than this...".

But I'm not that stupid/naive.

Actually, we no longer have the courage to deal with people like her. Quick trial, and then take her out back and shoot her.

My guess is there's something on those cards she doesn't want the world to see. So, instead of prostitution or porning it up with the neighbor, she's got murder 1.

JUST SHOOT HER!!

I've been wondering what could be on that card.

With the idiot judge above, it was pretty obvious (pics/video of underage boys showering at his fishing cabin, and him thoroughly checking them for ticks afterwards).

But this other idiot...yeah, something sexual or maybe evidence of criminal activity? But I can't imagine anything so crazy/weird/awful that it warrants what she did.

That just messed up, no matter what is on the card. No kid is messed up enough to lie about that after being shot once, at that point if the kid was lying, he had to know mom would not hesitate to shoot again. Sounds like a case of not wanting the kid and just wanting an excuse to do it. Either was she is clearly mentally unstable, and should be removed from society.

Marcia Lucas - George's ex and an editor on the original trilogy - isn't a fan of the newer releases.

Quote:
Marcia Lucas is no fan of the Disney-produced “Star Wars” movies.

...

Lucas won an Oscar for editing the original “Star Wars” along with Paul Hirsch and Richard Chew. She returned to co-edit “Return of the Jedi” and went uncredited on “The Empire Strikes Back.” Prior to “Star Wars,” Lucas made a name for herself editing Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver” and “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” and she was also Oscar nominated for “American Graffiti.” Marcia Lucas was married to George Lucas between 1969 and 1983.
I'd say she's got all the credibility and room to speak on such matters. It's one thing for a nobody on the Internet - me - to rag on them, but when you hear the ex-wife of George Lucas, and someone who was in the trenches back in the day and who helped edit/shape those first three movies, doing so...yikes!

Lucas continues...

Quote:
“I Like Kathleen. I always liked her,” Marcia Lucas says in Rinzler’s book, “Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life.” “She was full of beans. She was really smart and really bright. Really wonderful woman. And I liked her husband, Frank. I liked them a lot. Now that she’s running Lucasfilm and making movies, it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and J.J. Abrams don’t have a clue about ‘Star Wars.’ They don’t get it. And JJ Abrams is writing these stories — when I saw that movie where they kill Han Solo, I was furious. I was furious when they killed Han Solo. Absolutely, positively there was no rhyme or reason to it. I thought, You don’t get the Jedi story. You don’t get the magic of ‘Star Wars.’ You’re getting rid of Han Solo?”
She's just getting warmed up...

Quote:
“They have Luke disintegrate,” Lucas says. “They killed Han Solo. They killed Luke Skywalker. And they don’t have Princess Leia anymore. And they’re spitting out movies every year. And they think it’s important to appeal to a woman’s audience, so now their main character is this female, who’s supposed to have Jedi powers, but we don’t know how she got Jedi powers, or who she is. It sucks. The storylines are terrible. Just terrible. Awful. You can quote me…JJ Abrams, Kathy Kennedy — talk to me.'”

Tell us how you really feel, Marcia. Kinda different to hear from folks like this, or were/are in that circle and work with all these people, etc. Usually they opt for the neutral, diplomatic approach. Either they're good enough friends that they can do this and take it, or they're already frosty/no love lost and Lucas simply no longer cares to hold her tongue. So she doesn't.

I saw that. Devastating interview.

This could be wrong, but the price of getting Harrison Ford back might have been killing off Solo.
For some reason, Ford seems to prefer his characters die with him and never recast.
But they could have asked Lucas or someone else he trusted to talk with Ford, instead of just saying "Sure, we'll do that if you come back.")

At this point, as unbelievable as it sounds, the prequels are the only SW movies I enjoy watching anymore.
(You can always take a snack break during the Anakin/Padme romantic dialogue.)

I'd be up for them rebooting the Original Trilogy, starting after the Revenge of the Sith.
(Assuming, of course, the crew that botched the Sequel Trilogy first gets thrown out a SpaceX airlock.)

The headline surely qualifies for some sort of award.

And those two photos are beyond horrifying. WTF am I even looking at?!

Quote:
A mom and daughter who allegedly posed as plastic surgery pros have been charged with murder after an aspiring adult film actress’ illegal butt augmentation surgery turned deadly.

Libby Adame, 51, and Alicia Galaz, 23, were arrested Aug. 5 in Riverside, California, in connection with the death of 26-year-old Karissa Rajpaul, who died at a local hospital hours after she underwent the botched procedure.
Sounds like, no matter what, Ms. Rajpaul's butt likely wasn't long for this world.

Quote:
Detectives told local outlets that they had uncovered potential evidence in the case that suggests the pair used social media to advertise Brazilian butt lifts at a fraction of the usual cost.
AKA a 60-foot red flag to anyone with an ounce of sense. You get what you pay for, folks. Cosmetic, body-altering surgery probably isn't the thing to be looking for coupons or a Groupon deal via Facebook. Shell out the extra $$$ for the good stuff, performed by someone who actually went to something resembling a medical school.

Quote:
Investigators told KABC that they suspect the women injected Rajpaul with a cocktail of substances used by qualified cosmetic physicians in addition to other dangerous chemicals.

“They were mixing them with chemicals and other substances that clearly are not appropriate for any medical procedure that would be performed on a human," Hamilton said.
What...Quaker State? Laffy Taffy? Ink jet toner?

How does this even happen?!

Quote:
A mother and her 2-year-old son died on Saturday after falling from the upper deck at Petco Park before the San Diego Padres’ game against the Atlanta Braves, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The woman, 40, and her son were reportedly eating at a concession area on the third level concourse at the stadium on Saturday afternoon. Witnesses told the Union-Tribune that they suddenly saw the pair falling from the third level down to the street below.

How, exactly? Please don't tell me she was doing the selfie thing and sat on the rail or positioned herself in such a way that was unsafe and led to this. I will just lose all hope in humanity.

Quote:
The child’s father was at the stadium, too, though it’s unclear if he was with them when they fell. The incident is still being investigated.
I can't even imagine what he's going through (assuming, of course, he isn't the reason it happened).

From another article at USAToday:

Quote:
The pair fell from the third level concourse – the equivalent of six stories high – to the sidewalk below on Tony Gwynn Drive, Brown said.

Their names were not released; both lived in San Diego. The mother and child had been at a dining/concession area on the concourse level prior to the fall, Lt. Adam T. Sharki said. The child’s father was at the ballpark when the deaths occurred, police reported.

Police told the Union-Tribune it is too early to know whether the fall was accidental or intentional but noted that the victims’ deaths “appeared to be suspicious.”
Step 1: question the absolute shit out of the child's father; start there. Both articles refer to the man only as "the child's father", and that he was at the ballpark; were they there, together, as a happy family or...?

I don't have a good feeling about this...two people - a mom, with her two-year-old son - don't just "accidentally fall" from such a thing. I can only think of four reasons:

1. Stupidity/irresonsibility on the mother's part, sitting/climbing on a railing for "the perfect selfie" with her son, and losing grip/balance (my gut went with this first, just knowing how people are anymore about this kind of thing). But even without the "selfie"/look-at-me angle, if they were just climbing on/goofing around the railing and lost their balance/grip, that still falls under the "stupid/irresponsible" category.

2. Equipment failure (the rail they were next to gave way/snapped...seems we'd be aware of that by now, and be an obvious cause already..."the woman and her son died when the railing they were leaning against broke loose...", etc. There's nothing to "investigate", cause-wise, if that were the case. So I don't think that's it (but if it is, the lawyers are already lining up, I'm sure).

3. Pushed by someone...the child's father or some random(?) cretin(s), stranger or otherwise

4. Most awful of all, a desperate, tragic double-suicide type of thing. But why so public (and expensive...MLB ballpark parking, admission, concessions, etc.)? And the game hadn't even started. Makes no sense. Could've stayed home and done it quietly, in private, for free. So I don't buy this one either. 1 or 3 is my guess.

Once you cover idiocy/irresponsibility, equipment failure/tragic accident, murder and suicide, what's left?

This ballpark opened the year after I left San Diego/SoCal. I saw it under construction throughout 2000-2003 (and its progress was often shown on the local news) and looked forward to going there but never had the opportunity. It's really nice, from all I've seen and heard.

I suppose that could be. The boy was maybe playing on the railing, went over and in her efforts to grab/stop him, the mom lost her footing/balance and fell over as well.

Having trouble with that one, but crazy things do happen. I’m still in the #1 or #3 camp.

EDIT: From a story in the San Diego Union Tribune, updated last night:

Quote:
Several people who said they witnessed the fall were too shaken to talk.

A man who did not wish to be identified said his wife witnessed the fall. She told him that it appeared a toddler fell from an area with picnic tables, and the woman also fell while trying to grab the child.
If that's true, PB PM may be on to something...the kid was climbing around the railing, went over and, trying to stop/grab him, the mom did as well? May indeed be a horrible, tragic accident.

I saw a pic of a couple of policemen standing at the scene(?) and the railing, while not super low (of course), also isn't as high as I would've thought either. Wouldn't be hard for a curious little two-year-old (not being closely watched) to climb up that mesh wiring/grate and find himself in a bad position, and then for the mom to panic and, in a desperate lunge, going over the side herself.

Absolutely. Same here…I remember my niece and nephew at that age and the kids of friends over the years. Two-year-olds are active, curious little monkeys who run/climb/explore and are too young to know fear or grasp the idea of ‘consequences”. The world is their jungle gym and if you’re not paying attention, it doesn’t take long for them to be doing something that causes your heart to jump out of your chest.

Holy smokes...

Witness: Mom was jumping on bench with toddler before deadly Petco Park fall.

There's the sixth possibility/cause...and the one that never even occurred to me.

Quote:
A witness to a mother and toddler's deadly fall at Petco Park said the mother had a close call while jumping on a picnic table bench, with her 2-year-old son in her arms, near the ledge of an upper concourse. The witness said she was shocked to see the mother climb up on the bench with her son a second time.

"She lost her balance and fell off the bench. I remarked to my son, 'Oh my gosh she almost fell,'" the witness, who did not want to be identified, wrote in a statement shared with NBC 7.
I have no words.

"The man that was with her was standing by the railing as the woman started jumping on the bench of the table closest to the railing, holding the baby in her arms. She seemed happy — laughing," the witness said.

That's when the mother fell off the bench the first time.

"About 30 seconds or a minute later, she jumped back up and did it again, facing the man as she jumped with the baby," the witness recalled. "I remember saying, 'I can’t believe she’s doing that again,' and then she was gone...
From my vantage point, looking at her back, it was almost like she rolled over the railing. I told my son, 'Oh my gosh she went over!'"
I still have none.

So...abject stupidity may very well be the cause, on the part of a 40-year-old woman.

Not murder, not suicide, not faulty railing, not selfie-taking and not an unattended two-year-old. A "grown woman" jumping on the bench, a foot or two away from the railing (and a six-story drop).

Hey, why not?

Rampant, final-stage oblivitardation seems to have gripped the culture.
