I have a friend that's using the Mac OS X installation disc for his G4 tower because he forgot his password. I'm talking to him over the phone and what he seems to be saying is that he put's in the disc and it asks for the password again. Is this normal? What should he do here?

he's probably double-clicking the Install Mac OS X icon on the disc.

tell him to restart the computer and hold down the "C" key

I'll call him back right now and tell him that.

So he's installing OSX all over again?

Don't forget to tell him to put a password hint in this time.

He's using OS 10.2.x, so my Tiger only experience isn't gonna help him here. I told him to try the hint thing and he says it hasn't been working for him.

If he starts from the CD, there should be an option somewhere in the menus called "Reset Password."

It turns out he hasn't actually used this particular mac in a long time (?year), so he's completely forgotten the password, and says the hint never came up. He's reinstalling the whole thing, and archiving (I'm not sure where the archive folder will appear though).

He'll call back if he's still in trouble, but I think he'll be okay.

Thanks everyone for the quick help, I couldn't have done it without you.

A reinstall seems wasteful, given there is a menu option on most OS install discs to Reset Password.

Now that he's started... at least you get a few hours before he calls you back.

Off Topic: My symbol for approximately, you know the squiggly equal sign, turned into a question mark. How am I supposed to write that symbol? And while I'm on it how do you write the apple key symbol? I try shift-option-K, but that turns into a question mark as well.

Not all symbols are supported on all websites, or in all character sets.

The apple symbol failing to render properly on apple message boards is a bit ironic...,
but it's a known issue with no known workaround other than inserting a graphic image.

Or writing <apple> in bracketed text, for example.

Test:…

Nope still nothing, I could've sworn I'd seen the symbol on this board before.

Thanks for the PNG, Brad. Maybe I should bookmark it so I can link to it as an image. Now how do you make the symbol on the other side of the key? You know the pretzel, 4-leaf clover, command, "thing"?
