I have 2 things to ask about.
1) I have started getting pop-ups in safari. I have double and triple checked that pop-up blocking is ON, but, when I goto appleinsider, and macnn, and some other random sites, I have managed to get pop-ups. What's the deal? 2) Whenever I take a screenshot, the .pdf that shows up on the desktop is HUGE. Like, the .pdf is only 8k or whatever, but when I open it in graphic converter to change it to .jpg, it suddenly becomes 11+ MB with dimensions of thousands of pixels. Anyone know why that is? |

As a response to 1), I'd say that Safari's pop-up blocking is probably pretty simple. I mean, it doesn't even have an ignore list, and Safari hasn't really had any updates since its release about two years ago. Ever since Internet Explorer incorporated a popup blocker (with SP2), sites have probably started figuring out other ways to use popups and to get around the less advanced popup blockers. Firefox is constantly being developed, and the 1.0 release was less than a year ago so it's probably less suceptible.
As for 2), perhaps Graphic Converter just isn't very good at reading PDFs. It only recently got the ability to read PDFs, so it's possible that all the bugs regarding PDFs haven't been worked out yet. I'd suggest using Preview's Export feature to convert screenshots to JPGs, and then you can work on the JPGs in Graphic Converter if you want to resize or crop them. |

I've noticed the pop-ups getting through too. On AI, no less. Bastards.

Still... wow, I never realized preview had an export function. If only it had a resizing function as well.

Try ImageWell. Seriously. It's an awesome application. Especially useful for posting to message boards.
I captured and uploaded the above image and then inserted its URL into this post in about 27 seconds... I counted. bouncy bouncy |

I've started getting popups too from rumor sites. Odd, it started happened after 10.3.8 I think. I only got a couple otherwise.

No popups here with Safari. Never.
You guys' computers must just hate you. Or... do you have PithHelmet installed? It provides additional popup controls that might have gotten fudged at some point. Yea Brad, but when was the last time you went to AI?
I don't have pith helmet installed presently, I did tinker with it at one time, but ultimately disabled it, however, after this recent brush up with pop-ups and other obnoxious ads, I may very well get into the pith again. I THRASH: Yes, I never had any pop-ups prior to 10.3.8, but I don't know if I'd cast the blame on that, The windows SP 2 explanation definitely makes a little more sense. Unless perhaps Apple software engineers were tinkering with the Safari Pop-up Blocker in an effort to improve it, but in doing so actually hurt it? Doesn't seem all that likely, but those types of gaffs definitely happen. On a side note, it would be nice if Apple had more regular support with Safari. Ever since V1.2 it's been my default browser(before that I mainly used Camino) But, whether this pop-up issue is a result of more sophisticated pop-ups or not, it would still be nice if Apple released more frequent updates to the software. I mean, I guess it is pretty rock solid as is, but it's also fairly dated, especially considering every other browser seems to be updated quite a bit. Ah well, I'm generally not complaining, but these pop-ups are kinda annoying(although I generally don't notice them till I hit exposé since they go to the back of the windows) on an unrelated note, Yes, I think my computer does hate me. |

True, I can't remember the last time I was at AI, but is that the only site where popups are getting through? Can you name any others? I visit all kinds of sites regularly and am constantly visiting new ones by way of Google searches and I still have never seen a popup window in Safari.
On another note, why am I not surprised that the proprietor of AppleInsider is now resorting to sleazy pop-ups to get a few more hits from advertisers? Hi, I'm Tina! Ugh, don't remind me of.... her *shudder*
AI is the primary offender(as I still go there quite a bit, mostly to read, and laugh at the political flame wars) But it has also happened on MacNN once or twice, and it did happen at least 2 other times during my internet browsing of the day, though, since the pop-ups tend to hide in the back, I don't always notice them till I've left the site, and no, I'm trying to cover my tracks from all the porn I don't look at.... aw crap. seriously though, I was looking for some ROMs today, and those sites are full of crap... that affects windows users, it's a sad day that it troubles my OS X paradise. On a side note, it would be a pretty funny prank to pull to have a message play upon entering the site "Hi, My Name Is TINA!" just to give us old-timers all heart attacks But the fallout (posts in suggestions, genius bar, general discussion and AO saying "OMG TEH WTF?!") Might be a little much. |

Page deforming nostalgia! ah!
(what happened to posts being in their own separate containers for when big inline posts were there(so as to not upset the entire pages alignment)? Oh, smooth edit FFL, make me look like a jackass why doncha. |

I thought there was a command in the terminal you could put in to control the output of image captures? I forget what it was, or if there ever was a utility to do it. </onTopic> I noticed popups yesterday too. My brother said he has been getting them (he doesn't go to AI, not sure where), but I didn't really give much thought until I noticed I was getting them yesterday. I did notice the AI forums gives you one, and I think somewhere else I got one, don't remember where. Maybe I'll install pith and see if that fixes it. I've grown so accustomed to such a nice internet without popups. Although I should have reinstalled pith after I cleaned my system the other month. |

There's a thread over on MacNN in the Applications forum about this.
I'm running 10.3.7, no pith helmet installed. It's only ever happened to me on AI. And I've checked to make sure I've got 'Block pop-ups' checked. |

Brad,
If you want to get a pop-up ad with Safari, go to http://www.drudgereport.com/ I get one with every visit. It's the only site this happens to me on, though. n |

IFRAME[SRC*="altfarm.mediaplex.com"], That blocks an iframe with the source altfarm.mediaplex.com. I quit Safari, restarted Safari (probably overkill, I could have just closed the Drudge Report window), went to Drudge, and *bam* -- no pop-under. Every couple months or so, I add a little bit to usercontent.css, which I got from floppymoose.com quite some time ago. It seems to work fine. |
