I was using skype video for not more than 3 mins, and the computer shuts down. Right before using skype, 80% of the charge was left and then it went to 0% (I did the battery exchange and I got a new battery) I have a MBP with all the latest software and firmware updates. I don't think skype video uses so much of CPU power that the charge can run from 80% to 0% in such a short time. May be I am wrong, can someone please give me an explanation? Because if the battery is shit, then I need to change it. Thanks

Well, charge it and see how long it lasts. It may be a dud.

I have used the battery before, and it does hold 2+ hours under moderate work load. So I don't know what the flip happened, but I need to know for sure whether it is the battery or something else or if this is normal (which I hardly believe)

Nothing that runs on any portable Mac with a reasonably healthy battery can. I would mean that your MacBook/WhateverBook was drawing somewhere in the range of 2 KW.

It's probably a fluke. If it recurs, try resetting your PMU.

This sounds to me like the MBP battery issue they had last year. Some batteries swelled up, some (like mine) just put out less than 5 minutes of power then crapped out without warning. I'm not sure where Apple's FAQ on this issue is, but here's the battery replacement program website: https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/

The battery in your laptop is made up of (4?) cells. If some of those cells fail, but not all you'll see exactly the behavior you describe.

say each cell is 25% of your total battery life. You drop to about 75% and your computer goes to draw from the next cell, but there's nothing there, then tries the next and so on and suddenly in a second it's at zero percent.

Check it out with coconut battery, that might give you more accurate information.

well coconut battery solved the problem, so my battery is shit. How the hell is this possible? First of all I got the battery in October with the battery exchange program, so it is only 6 months. Since my computer still under warranty, would it be possible to exchange the battery to a new one or ...?

Yes, you should be able to get a new one free. Just bring it in and show them that screen right there.
