Hi, my name is Drew, and I'm a peripheral hoarder.

Today I migrated mom's 2012 Mac Mini to a 2019 iMac 27 inch.

In doing so I removed a vintage NewerTechnology miniStack v2.

What a deliberate little hub that was!

Bristling with USB and Firewire outputs, and it hosted a hard drive!

I was unable to mount its internal hard drive, and had patched around the device years ago, so the drive must have failed.

Even after removing the hard drive I must push myself to dispose of that peripheral.

And it is but one of many.

It's okay to let stuff go.

Wires to nowhere. Follow them. If you find something you're not using, toss it.

Just set the house on fire. It'll go faster.

I still have a 2012 Mac Mini sitting on my desk, kind of works as a music server, with an Apple Pro Keyboard. The date on the bottom of the keyboard says 2003, but no idea if it's that old, got it second hand for cheap.

We just had our new house wired for USB-C outlets. Time for USB-A to die.

Wait, what? You mean you replaced the power outlet plates with ones that have USB-C outlets as well, or that you ran USB-C cables through the walls?

'Cause I'm trying to think of a reason you would have a new house 'wired for USB-C outlets'. CAT8 I would understand.

A couple of the outlets have the standard 2 AC plugs but also have USB-C inputs to plug your cable directly into.

We only did CAT6. I have 22 drops around the house I think. 8 cameras, one behind each of the 4 TVs, couple ceiling APs, and then one or two for each bedroom and office.

Die young and save yourself....

Yeah, I think it's not really practical to do CAT8 in homes yet, which is why I intend to try it.

Oh, its closer then I thought. 10G fiber is right outside my house scheduled to go bright this month. I just started getting 10G networking hardware. Its... pricey.

I'm a tad bummed there are few 10G DDWRT/OpenWRT options but those will change over time as always. For now I'll have to rely on the ISP router.

Computers are definitely getting wired, but truth be told, wireless is perfectly fine for our entertainment systems. I may do a run for a Playstation for the occasional updates.

But soooo many CAT5 cables need replacing.

^^ One more quality post from the desk of Ebby. ^^

So yesterday I waded off into the sea of hoarded vacuum cleaner paraphernalia my dad had accumulated during his "retirement job". I needed to reach something but first had to move aside tubs and boxes.

Six years ago it would have been impossible to consider letting any of that stuff go, but now I'm all too ready to get it out of there.
